I met Princess Diana on one of her AIDS ward visits (Metro)

It's now 35 years later and this visit by Princess Diana to the first dedicated AIDS ward in London is a part of living history.

In 2020, it was estimated that there were almost 107,000 people living with HIV in the UK, according to the UK Health Security Agency. I also described the preparations leading up to the day – for example the strong smell of fresh paint in areas just outside the ward. It marked the start of her outstanding efforts to help change public and media attitudes towards people with HIV. I was part of a specialist multi-disciplinary team of nurses, dieticians, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and doctors. I vividly remember my first patient who had developed Kaposi sarcoma on their skin and hid the lesions from sight by wearing a long-sleeved shirt and a scarf, regardless of how hot it was. Consequently, we got to know them very well, as well as their partners and families. I’d wanted to be a doctor from around the age of 10 because two of my school friends’ fathers were doctors – one was our family GP. We weren’t simply treating that condition – we treated each person as an individual with their own unique life experiences and relationships. I thought this was a really important thing for him to offer to do. Inevitably, many needed to be readmitted to the ward after only a few weeks or so. What’s more, you can share their homes, their workplaces, and their playgrounds and toys.’ You can shake their hands and give them a hug.

Princess Diana: 25 years after her death, an enduring figure of ... (Euronews)

The documentary 'The Princess' is out on HBO and rolling out in select cinemas to mark the anniversary of Diana's death. But haven't we heard it all before?

“It’s such a commercial opportunity for the media to mark this anniversary - not so much here (in the UK) and much more in Europe, especially in Germany and France. The royal family have to keep away from it all and none of them watch any of them because it would drive you mad. It is human nature and there’s always going to be that fascination because Diana’s death was a shock and because she was so young. Intriguingly, The Princess also feels like it holds up a mirror, and not necessarily in the best of ways. “She was an icon and she had a very grubby death, and it’s not what we wanted or expected. It’s a good example of Diana’s life at the time from her perspective.”

On Wednesday August 31 it will be the 25th anniversary of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Denise Dodd: "We were visiting relatives in Cheshire and staying few days. There was a sombre mood everywhere and our hearts went out to her two lovely sons that she adored." It was a big topic among us British obviously but at the same time we were on a looked forward to holiday so wanted to carry on and enjoy. We had children from Eveswell School to look after and they all just wanted to see a real princess. Chris Rendle: "I won two tickets to see Wales v France in Cardiff in a rugby club raffle and I took my late dad, David, to the game. Bit of a strange atmosphere - it dominated the televisions in the bars and all nationalities were offering the Brits sympathy. The next day was so quiet, nobody wanted to do anything and everyone you spoke to were just so sad." We were all screaming for her to come over to our side but Charles did. Wales won and we both had a few beers!" Such a sad sad loss." We got out of the wrong door on the train at Cardiff and my dad walked into her walking up the platform. My son stayed up all night listening to the news.

The shirt and chinos she wore to an engagement in the Angolan capital of Luanda felt appropriately understated. Diana made headlines when she arrived at a Vanity Fair party at the Serpentine Gallery in 1994 wearing a black minidress by Greek designer Christina Stambolian. In her first visit to the ancient city of Kyoto she tried on a traditional Japanese kimono. She paired the dress with her famous pearl choker and took Travolta for a spin on the dancefloor. The event coincided with the airing of a documentary in which Prince Charles admitted to being unfaithful during their marriage, and Diana’s chosen look was infamously dubbed the “revenge” dress. Diana wore a full skirted, shimmering red polka-dot gown by Bellville Sassoon to watch a ballet at the Royal Opera House. As one of the most photographed women in the world, the Princess of Wales had an effortless approach to dressing. The pearl-covered gown is currently housed at the V&A museum. For her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles in St Pauls Cathedral, Diana wore an ivory silk taffeta and antique lace gown that embraced 80s style with its full skirt and puffed sleeves. Some credit Diana with having brought pedal pushers, which hadn’t been popular since the 50s, back into fashion. The dreamy dress cemented her fairytale princess status. It’s perhaps this chameleon ease of approach that has led her to become one of the most influential fashion muses of all time.
