Queen to appoint new prime minister at Balmoral for first time in her ... (Chard & Ilminster News)

Boris Johnson and the new Tory leader – either Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak – will travel to see the Queen in Scotland.

The Royal Encyclopedia states that the appointment of a prime minister is “one of the few remaining personal prerogatives of the sovereign”. After a new premier has been appointed, the Court Circular will record that “the Prime Minister kissed hands on appointment”. Mr Johnson said arrangements for the handover to the new prime minister will be down to the Queen and “fit totally around her and whatever she wants”. In 1963, Harold Macmillan resigned as PM while recovering from surgery. During her Jubilee celebrations, the Queen only travelled to Buckingham Palace twice – first for her Trooping the Colour balcony appearance and then for a finale after the pageant. The Queen is to remain in Scotland to appoint a new prime minister at Balmoral for the first time in her reign.

The Queen has been staying at the smaller Craigowan Lodge on her estate since arriving in Scotland on July 21. Her Majesty had been due to attend the ceremony in Scotland on August 8 but it was cancelled - and swiftly replaced with a “small, private event”. The decision to host the meeting in Scotland - rather than in the capital or at her Windsor Castle home - is reported to have been "taken now to provide certainty for Mr Johnson’s diary".

Queen to appoint new prime minister at Balmoral (BBC News)

In a break with tradition, the next PM will travel to Scotland for the appointment on 6 September.

Shortly after, the incoming PM is called up. The appointment of a prime minister is "one of the few remaining personal prerogatives of the sovereign", according to The Royal Encyclopaedia. As head of state, it is the Queen's duty to appoint the prime minister who leads Her Majesty's Government. Only three weeks ago it was expected that the Queen would travel from her summer break in Balmoral to London to invite the new prime minister to form a government. When a potential prime minister is called to see the Queen, she will ask them whether they will form a government. The Queen will not appoint the next prime minister in London, but will instead stay in Balmoral to do it, Buckingham Palace has said.

Queen Elizabeth won't return to London to appoint new British Prime ... (CNN International)

Queen Elizabeth II will receive the UK's next prime minister at Balmoral rather than Buckingham Palace -- a historic first for her 70-year reign.

Several events over the last 12 months have been modified for the Queen's "comfort" with one of the most recent examples being her arrival at Balmoral Castle earlier this month. In May, Princes Charles and William took center stage at the grand set-piece event, with the heir to the throne reading the government's legislative agenda for the year ahead on his mother's behalf. The result of that vote will be announced on Monday.

The 96-year-old monarch, who has faced ongoing mobility issues, traditionally holds audiences with outgoing and incoming premiers at Buckingham Palace.

The Royal Encyclopedia states that the appointment of a prime minister is “one of the few remaining personal prerogatives of the sovereign”. Buckingham Palace declined to give an ongoing commentary on the monarch’s health. The Queen is on her traditional summer break in the Scottish Highlands.

The Queen will part with tradition by officially appointing the next prime minister at Balmoral, rather than in London, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

The Queen and Boris Johnson: Constitutional problems, parties and ... (Chard & Ilminster News)

Mr Johnson, who will tender his resignation to the head of state next week, had a controversial time as PM.

The country was in a period of mourning after the death of the duke, and restrictions meant the Queen had to sit socially distanced from her loved ones at Philip’s pared back funeral as she mourned her husband of 73 years. The first in October was branded a sham ahead of the expected election and discourteous to the monarch. In the end, the Supreme Court ruled that Mr Johnson’s advice to the Queen to suspend Parliament was unlawful because it had the effect of frustrating Parliament. But Mr Cummings alleged Mr Johnson had wanted to visit her a week later, on March 18 when people in his office were isolating, but had to be convinced of the seriousness of potentially giving the Queen coronavirus. He made the revelations in an election campaign video filmed in a car on his way to meet the head of state on the day Parliament was dissolved, signalling the start of the general election. Mr Johnson was only a few hours into his post after succeeding Theresa May in July 2019 when he revealed what was said in his audience with the Queen as he accepted her invitation to form the next government and become prime minister.

According to palace sources, the monarch will discreetly twist her ring when she wishes to end a conversation. Royal historian Hugo Vickers explained that the queen always drapes her handbag over her left arm, so when she switches it, it’s an obvious sign that she’s bored and wants to move along. Of course, there is a system and she is very well rehearsed and very well practised at this. While that is the case, she is also famous for her wicked sense of humour and love of saying cheeky things to catch people off guard. While many people have previously admitted to becoming tongue-tied in front of the monarch, it seems she has a invented a clever trick to take away the initial awkwardness in any conversation.
