By the end of Laura Kuenssberg's new politics show, she may well have wondered whether comedian Joe Lycett was a wise booking.
For 29 years, the Sunday morning political show on BBC One has been presented by guys in ties: Sir David Frost from 1993 to 2005, followed by Andrew Marr ...
The trio mainly chatted politics but were also asked about the [Artemis space project](https://www.theguardian.com/science/2022/sep/03/artemis-1-nasa-to-make-second-attempt-at-launching-rocket-around-moon) and the [Foo Fighters concert](https://www.theguardian.com/music/2022/sep/04/taylor-hawkins-tribute-concert-review-stars-unite-to-honour-the-late-foo-fighters-drummer) at Wembley. A strong sense came through of Zelenska’s astonishing courage and somehow even humour, in trying to support her family and country to overcome existential threats. [aide Cleo Watson](https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jul/29/former-aide-likens-boris-johnson-exit-to-storming-of-capitol-cleo-watson) and the comedian Joe Lycett. But if it continues, the taking of ironic mock political positions is going to make the BBC’s pursuit of editorial neutrality even harder. Frost/Marr and Westminster men wore suits of the same colour on hundreds of occasions without comment, so perhaps we should drop this as an issue for women in public life. In the opening moments, the former BBC political editor introduced another revolutionary move.
The comedian took aim at the government and the Tory party's potential new leader on the BBC's new Sunday politics show.
I think she’s right to say, basically, let’s not predict, let’s just see what happens next week. I wouldn’t say that because I’m incredibly right-wing, but some people might say that... You’re reassured, I’m reassured, are you reassured?!” I know exactly what she’s up to.” I think we know exactly what’s going to happen. I know there’s been criticism in the Mail on Sunday today about leftie liberal wokie comedians on the BBC.
The BBC's flagship political interview show, hosted first by Sir David Frost then by Andrew Marr, relaunched this morning under Laura Kuenssberg. On paper, she ...
All told, plenty of lessons for the BBC to incorporate for next week’s episode. As a result, it fell apart on the launchpad – and the winner was Joe Lycett, who walked away with plenty of material for his next show. The BBC used to have some of the best title sequences in world: think back to John Humphrys’ On The Record ( Lycett seemed to say: 'This woman becomes prime minister tomorrow, and the BBC is going to a comedian like me for first analysis? And that Liz Truss is the backwash of the available MPs. Warming to his newly-invented persona, he declared Truss to be 'saying exactly the right things' and being 'very reassuring' with her energy promises.
Asked by Laura about the strength of Liz Truss' position at the moment, Joe reflected: 'I think the haters will say that we've had 12 years of the Tories and ...
One more added: ‘In a single morning @joelycett has blown the lid off a failed format. ‘As Liz said there, it would be wrong to predict the future – even though loads of people have predicted that we’re going to have real issues with paying our energy bills. She suggested there’s a big package of help coming this week to hep people pay their bills’. Joe Lycett has performed a public service, quite frankly.’ [Joe Lycett](https://metro.co.uk/tag/joe-lycett/?ico=auto_link_entertainment_P1_LNK1) made sure to liven up the BBC’s new [politics](https://metro.co.uk/tag/politics/?ico=auto_link_entertainment_P1_LNK2) programme Sunday With [Laura Kuenssberg](https://metro.co.uk/tag/laura-kuenssberg/?ico=auto_link_entertainment_P1_LNK3), leaving fans in pieces as he spent the whole show being incredibly sarcastic. [who has often criticised the government](https://metro.co.uk/2022/07/29/commonwealth-games-2022-joe-lycett-trashes-government-in-opening-ceremony-17089635/), joined Labour’s Emily Thornberry and former Number 10 staffer Cleo Watson to give his take ahead of the new leader of the Conservative party being announced.
The atmosphere was congenial as Kuenssberg probed, but didn't grill Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak - but the addition of Joe Lycett was an error.
[Alexis Carrington](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/0/disgrace-fine-show-joan-collins-put-nasty-dynasty/) of the Labour Party, knows how to deliver a one-liner. There was nothing revolutionary here - the backdrop changed from photography of a skyline to drawings of it, the News at Ten studio repurposed for the occasion. One hopes, though, that the busy format can be slimmed down when the need arises, to allow for longer-form interviews and tougher interrogation. The ballot has closed, the public has no say in which of them gets to be leader. When Truss assured us that she would deal with people’s rising energy bills within one week of taking office, then doggedly failed to say how, Kuenssberg pressed her but didn’t get annoyed. “We are here to ask the important questions that you want answers to,” Kuenssberg said.
BBC Laura Kuenssberg appeared visibly frustrated at comedian Joe Lycett mocked ring wing voters on the first episode of her new show.
But we also need to sort out the supply issues." In an interview with Ms Laura Kuenssberg's programme, she said: "I will act if I'm elected as prime minister. It was fine." You're reassured, I'm reassured." Mr Lycett continued: "Yeah. I know there's been criticism in the Mail on Sunday about lefty, liberal comedians on the BBC.
Foreign secretary's appearance on BBC's new Sunday politics TV show deepens enigma of her own making.
Turning the screw to the last. The more we all get to see of her, the less competent she appears to be. The rest of the show passed less eventfully with a moving interview with Olena Zelenska in Kyiv and then a polite if inconsequential eight-minute exchange with Sunak. I’d hate to think of the state we’d be in if Britain wasn’t so prepared. The credits opened with Kuenssberg standing in front of what looked like a half-finished cartoon of Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament and the Angel of the North, while promising this show was going to be different from all the others. Lycett merely said that he had come to hear the truth. She went on to insist that cutting taxes was important because it was necessary to reward the most well-off in society; that it would be wrong for her to worry about inflation as that was the Bank of England’s problem; that she was waiting for the health secretary, whom she hadn’t yet appointed, to tell her what to do about the NHS. We then moved to two Ikea chairs and an Ikea table which formed the set for the main interview. Which suggested he had come to the wrong place. We are all obliged to pretend that Truss isn’t a certainty to become the new leader of the Tory party on Monday, so she is still umbilically linked with Rishi Sunak. Which meant that the show also had to find time for Ready for Rish! Half the battle in launching a new Sunday politics TV show is booking the right guests.
Comedian Joe Lycett impressed fans during his appearance on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, leaving them in stitches. And later revealed he also gave her an ...
Speaking about his opinion on the interview, he said: "You said earlier I’m not left or right. Genuinely genius performance." Joe told her: "Yeah, she was very clear what she said. I’m reassured, you’re reassured." To add to his great segment, he turned to Emily, who was amused by the entire situation, and asked: "Are you reassured?" I know exactly what she's up to.”

Introducing a group of athletes during the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Birmingham in July, he said: 'I'm going to do something now that the British Government doesn't always do, and welcome some foreigners, this time from the region of Asia.' Of course the BBC, like everyone else, is under budget constraints, but that is no reason to make a fetish of it all. Kuenssberg is one of the BBC's biggest political talents, known for her energy, aggression and intelligence. Dragon lady Emily Thornberry in the traps, smoke pouring from her nostrils, just itching for the moment she could gallop free and launch a personal attack on Liz Truss instead of contributing to the debate. He once stormed off the set of Channel 4 magazine show Steph's Packed Lunch during a segment on recycling. I suppose Cleo Watson was there in a laughable BBC attempt at political balance and all that can be said about her contribution is that she wore a nice jumper. It was as if she quite fancied another mojito and a boogie rather than a serious discussion about energy bills. We want politicians held to account, their feet held to the fire and their kidneys grilled to a crisp as their pips squeak. Perhaps that is why, all of a sudden, this format just seems so hopeless and dated. For one long, awkward hour Laura Kuenssberg's debut Sunday morning show mirrored the trajectory of the Artemis spaceship it briefly featured – by completely failing to get off the ground. Both promptly failed to answer with a yes or a no. Since 2015 she has been a formidable presence as the BBC's political editor.

Liz Truss has said that said she wanted to reassure voters that help is coming with the cost of living saying: “I will act if I'm elected as prime minister. Interrupted by the BBC host to state that despite his tone this was a serious matter, Lycett quipped: “I’m not being sarcastic. It feels cruel as it was Laura’s first show and having a guest who isn’t taking it seriously feels unkind.” Another wrote however: “Oh he was being sarcastic? She gave great, clear answers.” He added: “I think, you know, the haters will say we’ve had 12 years of the Tories and we’re sort of at the dregs of what they’ve got available and that Liz Truss is sort of like the backwash of the available MPs.

Ms Truss’s promise of an announcement on the energy crisis within a week, but with no further details, was underwhelming to say the least. Scotland’s First Minister also managed to add fuel to the fire in her spat with Ms Truss, who had called Ms Sturgeon an “attention seeker”. Frost was an iron fist in a velvet glove; Marr a winning mix of forensic and aggressive. (And yes, no-one would probably comment on the clothes if it had been a man, but Kuenssberg recently did a shoot with Vogue, so clothes clearly matter to her.) In the unlikely event the production team make only one change between now and next Sunday, it should be to get rid of the espresso machine pronto. So after Frost on Sunday, Breakfast with Frost, and The Andrew Marr Show, it’s now Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg.

He said he would be taking a Daily Mail front page reporting his performance “to the framers”. “Modernising the show is fine as an aim but it looked like the BBC is ‘dad dancing’. Reports suggest Nadine Dorries could stay on as Culture Secretary, either as an MP or in the Lords. And what we don’t know,” she said. It’s a clear break – and by far the most important thing she said. “It was always going to risk trivialising the whole exercise on day one. The Exec(utive editor, Katy Searle) is paid to spot risks and intervene. Kuenssberg told viewers she wanted her new show to be “fun” but appeared unprepared for Lycett, who is known for his stunts. She agreed to give a significant interview after blowing out Nick Robinson,” an insider said. The BBC defended the broadcast, saying: “There will be a wide range of guests, with a wide range of opinions, throughout this series.” “What she said – in marked contrast to B Johnson – is that, for her, economic growth matters more than income distribution. But did the panel discuss it?

In an interview with the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme, Miss Truss said: 'I will act if I'm elected as prime minister. 'I have a bold plan to see Britain through difficult times and get us out the other side stronger,' she told the Daily Mail. 'How could that possibly be the right thing for the BBC to do. You show me a launch programme that gets every tiny detail right on day one.' Rob Burley, a former BBC editor of live political programmes, said: 'Memo: Don't put comedians on Question Time or any other serious political show. They added: 'It's important that impartiality isn't seen as balance in one show. I think it is absurd. I think it made Laura Kuenssberg look stupid ... And we all feel that it's been well thought out,' he added. I thought she was very clear, she gave great clear answers. And we all liked the plan. I think you know exactly what's going to happen.

“I think that I think they maybe were slightly surprised that I’m incredibly right wing now. “My BBC source said that she had. So I think I just leapfrogged it?” “But so has Liz Truss, you know, she was a Lib Dem now she’s a Tory, she was Remainer. I have you know, I have changed my viewpoints over the years. I wouldn’t say that because I’m incredibly right wing, but some people might say that.”
