Reading vs Stoke City: Match Preview 2022/23 (The Tilehurst End)

Will the 'new manager bounce' effect haunt the Royals today?

Up top, Long comes in for Joao following an underwhelming couple of performances for the latter, who may need a bit more time to get himself back up to speed. I can’t help but feel the appointment of the Scot was a shrewd one with his previous promotion-winning experience at Norwich City - and they have also weakened a league rival in the process with the 41-year-old leaving Sunderland to take up this post. In fairness, taking Holmes out of the starting lineup could be disruptive too. Considering the latter was released from Metz earlier this summer and probably doesn’t live in England at this stage, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he’s staying at the club hotel and with that, he may stay put for a bit longer. The Potters will be hoping to pick up their form following the appointment of Alex Neil, something that was seen as a coup by many considering he was progressing well at Sunderland before his switch to the bet365 Stadium. Leaving Tom Holmes out was a difficult decision, but Junior Hoilett didn’t do much wrong at Bramall Lane and probably deserves to start ahead of Holmes who wasn’t at his best.

Reading FC player ratings vs Stoke City: Lucas Joao the star in ... (Berkshire Live)

Our verdict on how each Reading FC player fared against Stoke City in the Championship at the Select Car Leasing Stadium on Sunday lunchtime.

Missed a glorious opportunity towards the end of the first half when he guided the ball over the bar when it looked easier to score. Clever at finding spaces to make himself available for passes and pressed the Stoke players hard. Plenty of effort as usual from the former Stoke man who never stopped running, but lacked an end product at times. Brilliant in the air and kept calm under pressure late on. Brought back into the side with Loum absent from the matchday squad. Helped stretch the game in the second half with several bursts of pace down the left and set up the penalty with a cross into the box. Superb defensive performance, with a number of headers away and blocks. Great shift as usual, bombing up and down the flank. Was in the wrong place at the wrong time, though, as Wilmot's shot deflected off him and over Lumley for the Potters' equaliser. Gave Reading the perfect start with a fine finish after a horrendous mistake by Stoke no.1 Jack Bonham and made no mistake from the spot with a powerful, precise finish after he was fouled in the box. Didn't have a huge amount to do but was solid when called upon. Could have scored late on and could also have won his side a penalty when he was fouled right on the edge of the box.

Reading, with familiar faces including Tom Ince and Mark Bowen in their ranks, sit seventh in the Championship before kick-off after winning four of their open ...

Thompson tries a cross with his right foot and well, let's leave it at that. Paul Ince: "It's about time we had a gift. Alex Neil: "Some things in football you just can't legislate for. "There were only two things that were going to decide the game and we spoke about it in the two days prep. Neil: "We said the same against Swansea and it's been a bad trait we've had for a considerable time. In the second half when we needed to play more at a tempo to get back into the game you could tell we had Clucas breaking down with his hamstring and some of the other lads looked really leggy. He made a sprint to try to get back as quickly as he could and he's felt something." But the more I give them minutes like Sam, then what happens is they are capable of breaking down because they're not ready in the first place. if you're physically in the best shape you'll make the best decisions because you're fresh all the time. Neil: "No, it was a bad decision. Neil was watching in the stands last weekend as Stoke won at Blackburn before being officially appointed the following day. EFL rule highlighted as Reading keeper's extraordinary time wasting ... (Stoke-on-Trent Live)

"We were great at seeing out results in the Premier League by doing that. Asmir Begovic might feel a sudden nick that needed the physio's attention." A video of ...

The Premier League has this season put in place a multiball system to cut down on time wasting and improve the amount of time a ball is in play. For clarity, the referee’s decision is final and the match result stands." [Ryan Shawcross made the point last season:](https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/ryan-shawcross-nathan-jones-diamond-6163373) "You can always easily concede one goal, even when you think you’re in control. Amid whoops from the home fans, he then paused to chat with a steward as he leaned over the advertising board with his hands on the ball. That means the goalkeeper taking his time, taking time on free-kicks, get a yellow card or two for time-wasting. "Technology is there to support the decision-making processes of match officials in the Championship and it failing in such a manner on Sunday is a matter of great concern. [in the comments section...](https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/stoke-city-reading-joe-lumley-7548160#comments-wrapper) "While the system was tested and functional prior to the start of the game, further information is expected from both Hawk-Eye and PGMOL following a full review of the incident. This season's EFL handbook details: "In all matches played under the auspices of the league, the home club shall provide and the participating clubs shall use only the official ball approved from time to time by the league. A statement from the Premier League added: "This move should mean the ball is returned into play quicker, and referees have been instructed to keep an eye on this and issue yellow cards if necessary, or return to the one-ball system if they feel the multi-ball system is being abused by the home team." [Tyrese Campbell](https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/all-about/tyrese-campbell) pulled back for [Sam Clucas](https://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/all-about/sam-clucas) to send a shot over the bar. But keeper Lumley was taking no chances in the closing stages so when the ball went over the bar in added time he headed it back into the stand after it was thrown back to him by a steward.
