Israel-Premiertech's young New Zealand rider Corbin Strong took victory on a picturesque first stage of the Tour of Britain in Aberdeenshire.
A minute clear 5km from the line, the quintet were only swept up after Gloag made his move with 2km remaining. There were brief glimpses, too, of other, less well-known British prospects: a searing if short-lived attack from Thomas Gloag, who will ride alongside Primoz Roglic at Jumbo-Visma, and an eighth place for the talented climber Oscar Onley, riding for the German World Tour squad DSM. “It’s a big result for me,” said Strong, “in my first year with Israel-Premier Tech there have been lots of ups and downs.
The Israel-Premier Tech rider took a surprise victory in Aberdeenshire.
Alex Dowsett (Israel-Premier Tech) took control of the chase and towed the bunch in a bid to reduce the deficit. With the gradient growing steeper, Richie Porte (Ineos Grenadiers) pulled through to the front, trailing Magnus Sheffield and Omar Fraile on his wheel - their teammate There's been a lot of ups and downs and [I'm] learning the way of the pro peloton. Tom is one of Cycling Weekly's news and features writers. The peloton came back together on the run-in to the line, before Fraile opened up his sprint with 200m to go and kicked into the wind. "This year hasn't gone all to plan - my first year with Israel-Premier Tech. Behind, Ineos Grenadiers and Israel-Premier Tech shared chasing duties, and the breakaway’s gap was reeled in to one and a half minutes with 50km still to race. Just 15 minutes after the flag drop, the peloton had its first withdrawal when Marco Haller (Bora-Hansgrohe) collided with a motorbike. The breakaway then rotated through turns as they ploughed through the verdant Scottish countryside. The group stretched out a five-minute advantage as they set out to tackle the first categorised climbs of the day. On the category-two climb of Suie Hill, Basset and Scott duelled for mountains points, with the Human Powered Health rider taking the spoils over the summit. Billed as the Queen Stage, the day began amid a yellow weather warning for the region, with heavy rainfall and howling winds characterising the first half of the race.

“I was a bit out of position with 300m to go but then I got on the Ineos lead-out train. He has held the position of European editor since 2012 and previously worked for Reuters, Shift Active Media, and Cycling Weekly, among other publications. Ineos Grenadiers took up the chase to keep team leader Pidcock in overall contention. However, he only served to lead-out Strong, who lived up to his name and took his first professional victory. However, Strong was perfectly positioned on Omar Fraile’s wheel and then the 22-year-old Kiwi rider surged past him to hit the line first. A break of six courageous riders forced Ineos Grenadiers to lead the chase all day.

The top favorite for the race rejoined the massed peloton soon after but was caught out of position and away from his Ineos Grenadiers crew. The Austrian veteran crashed with a moto soon after the flag dropped and abandoned. A crash and solo attack out of the bunch at 2km to go briefly lit up the action, but it was all-set for the final bunch sprint as Ineos scooped up the remains of the break and controlled the race toward its final. The 22-year-old is renowned for his track talent after taking gold at the 2020 points race world championships. Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) dropped out of the back of the bunch at 5km to go but didn’t seem to have a mechanical problem. Bora-Hansgrohe later confirmed Haller “seems to be quite OK.
New Zealand's Corbin Strong hopes his victory in the opening stage of the AJ Bell Tour of Britain can be a breakthrough moment in his road cycling career.
“I just really have to thank the team for trusting in me. I come from Invercargill right down the bottom of New Zealand. “The Tour of Britain is pretty unpredictable. I have been predominantly successful on the track, but I haven’t had success on the road in Europe. It suited me well.” It will be an interesting few days.
