But in a reference to the Roman statesman Cincinnatus, he said he was “returning to my plough” – although Johnson was likely to know the remark would raise eyebrows. “If Dilyn and Larry can put behind them their occasional difficulties, then so can the Conservative party,” he said. He said he would be offering the new government nothing but “the most fervent support”. Johnson said it was a “tough time for the economy, a tough time for families up and down the country. Johnson said he would remain loyal and supportive to Truss after his departure. Truss will be received by the Queen after Johnson’s visit – about half an hour later – and officially asked to form a government, the point at which she becomes prime minister.

"It is time for us all to get behind Liz Truss and her team, and her programme, and deliver for the people of this country. "Congratulations to Liz Truss on her decisive win. We can and we will get through it and we will come out strong on the other side." Johnson also called for his party to unite behind Truss after months of infighting during the leadership contest. "We are, of course, providing the short and long-term solutions for our energy needs, not just using more of our domestic hydrocarbons, but going up by 2030 to 50 gigawatts of wind power," he said. Comparing himself to a "booster rocket", Johnson suggested he would initially take a backseat role in politics. "Boris, you got Brexit done. Making our streets safer, building more hospitals, and yes, we will have 50,000 more nurses by the end of this parliament and 40 new hospitals by the end of the decade," he said, before correcting himself and promising the hospitals by the end of this parliament. Johnson has already faced criticism for not having delivered on the hospital promise. In a tweet after her victory, Johnson congratulated her for her "decisive win" as he encouraged the party to rally behind her. He added: "This is a tough time for the economy, this is a tough time for families up and down the country. "This is it, folks....In only a couple of hours I will be in Balmoral to see Her Majesty the Queen and the torch will finally be passed to a new Conservative leader," Johnson told a large crowd of supporters assembled outside Number 10 for his farewell address.

Liz Truss confirmed as prime minister after meeting Queen at ... (The Guardian)

Latest updates: Liz Truss invited to form a new government after becoming the UK's new prime minister.

She says she told Truss she would be “better placed to support her from outside of the cabinet”. Truss’s views seem to have changed greatly from her Oxford University Lib Dems days when, at a party conference in Brighton in 1994, she contributed to a debate on the abolition of the monarchy, saying “we do not believe people should be born to rule”. He is expected to be made levelling up secretary in the reshuffle later today. He said he expected Truss’s cabinet to include people who supported Rishi Sunak in the leadership contest. Clarke rejected suggestions that the Truss energy package would spook the financial markets. When it is clear an individual can form a government, they are made Prime Minister, to quote Harold Wilson in 1964, “on the spot”. In her letter Dorries partly explains why she likes the outgoing PM so much. The monarch meets the departing prime minister and their successor, often in quick succession. Sir Iain Duncan Smith, the former Tory leader and Liz Truss supporter, told the World at One that he was offered a cabinet job by Truss but decided not to accept it. According to the Commons library briefing, even though Buckingham Palace says Truss “kissed hands” upon her appointment as PM, she probably didn’t. We’ve now got a picture of Liz Truss meeting the Queen. The Queen, of course, has said even less over the past 70 years about her audiences with her prime ministers.

What will Boris Johnson do next? Surely not a return to No 10 … (The Guardian)

The former prime minister will make a lot of money writing columns and giving speeches, but friends hint at a Churchillian comeback.

Johnson has long been a popular draw for corporate events, making up to £100,000 a time in 2019. This paradoxical sense of poverty is echoed by the fact Johnson is sometimes described as homeless beyond Downing Street. But one thing seems certain about his time after he leaves Downing Street: he will make a lot of money. Being a former prime minister brings extra cachet, with the notably more wooden Theresa May now making He’ll write provocative articles, make interesting speeches, all of which he’ll make a lot of money from. But whether he actually has plans in place to do it, I’m not so sure.”

Boris Johnson urges Tories to get behind Liz Truss in farewell speech (BBC News)

Outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged Conservatives to get behind his successor Liz Truss during a "tough time", in his farewell speech. Mr Johnson has met the Queen at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where he tendered his resignation as PM.

suggesting he still has a role to play and has been hard done by is part of that narrative". "This is a tough time for families up and down the country," Mr Johnson said in front of No 10 Downing Street. "That is for two reasons - I don't think the Tory Party is used to going back in time... The Queen will invite Ms Truss - as the leader of the largest party in Parliament - to form a government, making her the monarch's 15th prime minister. Ms Truss and Mr Johnson have made the 500-mile trip to Balmoral separately to have their audiences with the Queen and complete the ceremonial transition of power. Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner said Mr Johnson had left a legacy of "scandal" and urged his successor to fund a freeze on energy bills by adopting the party's plan for a windfall tax on gas and oil companies. As Mr Johnson and his wife Carrie head to Balmoral, there's time to unpick some of the words he chose to use to mark his departure. Will Mr Johnson really "splash down invisibly in a remote corner of the Pacific"? Reflecting on the future of his career, Mr Johnson compared himself to "one of those booster rockets" that "has fulfilled its function". Paying tribute to his colleagues in government, Mr Johnson said they were the people who "got Brexit done", delivered "the fastest vaccine rollout in Europe", and "organised those prompt supply of weapons to Ukraine". "It's time for us all to get behind Liz Truss and her team and her programme and deliver for the people of this country," he said. In his speech, Mr Johnson alluded to the ominous challenges Ms Truss will inherit when she takes office, acknowledging that this was "a tough time for the economy".
