Individuals will have 30 days to respond or face to prospect of of fines and a fuller investigation into their financial affairs. In return, HMRC will send an acknowledgment letter, offering them 90 days to pay the tax owed. Uber has said it will fully comply with HMRC's investigation and hand over all possible information, however the taxi giant argues as drivers are 'self-employed', its powers are limited. In London alone, there is more than 100,000 private hire drivers and just 22,000 traditional black cab drivers - the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association (LTDA) say. From April 2022, the Government introduced more in-depth checks in licence renewals for private hire drivers, which is required every three years. This is because they cannot renew their licence without a HMRC code.
