"The sad thing is that this is the level of our elite refereeing at the moment. The referee should have stuck to his own guns and been big enough to do what he said. I'm amazed that VAR sent the referee to the screen. Chelsea were the victims of an incorrect call last month, with Mike Dean - who was on VAR duty at the time - later admitting he should have advised a red card for Spurs defender "Then he acted as if it was a shoulder injury. The referees' body has effectively admitted the decisions to disallow goals at Chelsea and Newcastle on Saturday were wrong.

“But if you’re saying today that the referee’s mistake was corrected by VAR, I’m saying I do not see that in a million years. “But without that push, there’s no way that Joe would have gone in with that force, so for me it’s not a foul. But I would hope if the referee made a mistake, that’s why it’s corrected by VAR.

Secondly, with the offsides it is absolutely ridiculous how so many goals are getting ruled out that shouldn’t be. For starters, I think that if a former PL player had been involved yesterday, both the Newcastle and West Ham goals would have stood. Firstly, this weekend in particular has highlighted the apparent failure of this process when the VAR official is alerting the referee to review a decision, by looking at a replay on the pitchside monitor. I think this would seriously cut down the number of reviews and decisions getting overturned that shouldn’t have been. As many people have commented, VAR is not the problem, in terms of using TV replays. My suggestion therefore would be that as well as having the current VAR official who is a past or present referee, they should also have a former Premier League player sitting with every VAR official.

“If VAR intervenes and the referee is sent to the monitor, the likelihood is they’re going to go with VAR. In the case of the Newcastle game, why is the VAR getting involved? And then we also need to appoint VARs that work as a team with referees. “What we have seen is that VAR really isn’t working. “I hated the VAR decision. A marginal VAR call also meant an Alexander Isak goal was chalked off, although neither of those decisions were as obviously incorrect as Saturday’s bad call.
