Priti Patel resigned by letter on Monday following Liz Truss's victory in the Tory leadership contest.

At the same time, we have strengthened our country's proud record of providing sanctuary and refuge to those in genuine need by establishing safe routes, including for NOs, Afghans and Ukrainians. This package of measures will lead to lasting reforms to the UK's asylum and removal system. We have also rightly been tough on foreign national offenders and despite the challenges to international travel posed by COVID-19, we have deported nearly 12,000 over the three years to March 2022. Thank you for the great honour you have given me, not only in making me Home Secretary, but in supporting me throughout. I congratulate Liz Truss on being elected our new Leader, and will give her my support as our new Prime Minister. We have re-affirmed the Conservative Party's status as the party of law and order by backing our police with a record £17 billion of investment and funding 20,000 more police officers. This is why we fully reviewed all aspects of Channel operations covering 'push backs' at sea and military interceptions in the Channel. In April, I secured the world-first Migration and Economic Development Partnership with Rwanda. We have used our Brexit freedoms to take back control of our immigration laws with a new points- based immigration system. Our historic Immigration Act has ended free movement and taken back control of our borders. Your support over this period has delivered an unparalleled package of reforms and investment. Parliament was tearing itself apart as some MPs showed contempt for democracy and desperately tried to block Brexit.

In her resignation letter to Mr Johnson, she said it had been the “honour of my life” to serve as home secretary and urged the new regime to back her immigration policies. Ms Patel blamed “political opponents, and left-wing activists, lawyers and campaigners” for trying to block some of her ambitions and said she would continue championing her causes from the back benches. Rudy Schulkind, the research and policy manager for Bail for Immigration Detainees, said that under Ms Patel the Home Office had become “less willing to work with and consult civil society”. The Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI) said Ms Patel had ramped up previous hostile environment policies “to the point of brutality, amounting to a sustained attack on refugees”. Lucy Moreton, a professional officer at the Immigration Services Union (ISU), said the push-back policy was announced in spite of “clear advice from officials that this was not legally possible in territorial waters, not safe in such a crowded waterway and not viable because of the nature of the vessels”. Home Office policy has become increasingly focused on the idea of reducing crossings with “deterrents”, but Ms Patel’s plan to force dinghies back to France did not come to fruition, and the

Her early resignation probably indicates that she will not be on the same wavelength as incoming Prime Minister Liz Truss. It’s a waste, especially with some sources mentioning that the fee was non-refundable to Privilege Style to operate the flight as well. For those that do not know, Privilege Style came into the crossfire thanks to a deportation flight to Rwanda that never came to a head.

In her resignation letter to Boris Johnson, shared on social media, Ms Patel said it was her “choice” to continue her public service from the backbenches, when Ms Truss formally takes up her post as prime minister on Tuesday. Priti Patel: Loathed by the left, no longer a darling of the right, the ... (iNews)

Former home secretary overpromised and undelivered on tackling the Channel migration crisis and it cost her status as darling of the Tory right.

In a letter to Mr Johnson setting out her plan to resign after Liz Truss takes office as prime minister, Ms Patel said it had been the “honour of my life” to serve as home secretary and that she would “continue my public service to the country and the Witham constituency from the backbenches” once a successor is appointed. She also oversaw the setting up of the points-based immigration system promised by her and Mr Johnson as part of the Vote Leave campaign, although there are the beginnings of rumblings of discontent on the right over the fact it is not leading to significantly lower overall immigration. She also managed to ensure the Government offered sanctuary to tens of thousands of Ukrainians and Afghans fleeing the terrible situations in their countries, and although many of the latter still languish in hotels, that is not the responsibility of her department. That all-but-guaranteed that the intractable problem of the Channel migration crisis became the central and defining issue of her time as home secretary and – with record numbers making the crossing this year – it is a promise she has been unable to keep. [argued in her resignation letter](https://inews.co.uk/news/politics/priti-patel-resign-why-home-secretary-quit-liz-truss-cabinet-reshuffle-explained-2-1835479?ico=in-line_link) that she smashed through massive opposition to come within touching distance of achieving her plan to deport some of those who cross the Channel to Rwanda, insisting she has “laid strong foundations” for her successor to stem the flow of small boats. On the latter, Ms Patel made a rod for her own back by pledging in 2020 to make it “unviable” for asylum seekers to enter Britain by crossing the English Channel in small boats.

The Conservative MP for Witham has been described as 'hardline' by Boris Johnson.

This prompted a judge to direct jurors to ignore comments made by politicians on social media. The fallout resulted in former Home Office permanent secretary Sir Philip Rutnam accepting a six-figure sum from the Government after launching legal action against her following his dramatic resignation in 2020, in which he accused her of bullying subordinates and carrying out a “vicious and orchestrated” briefing campaign against him.

The Home Secretary had been facing a likely demotion under Ms Truss – with speculation that either Suella Braverman or Thérèse Coffey will replace her.

Steve Crawshaw of Freedom from Torture said: “Priti Patel has presided over some of the most morally abhorrent and legally questionable policies in our country’s recent political history. What we have seen over the last few years is the opposite.” He urged the next Home Secretary to address the major failings in the asylum system, which was “in desperate need of reform”, and create a system which was efficient, fair and humane. He said: “Attempts to treat people in the asylum system as human cargo by sending them on a one-way ticket to Rwanda is the latest, devastating attack on refugee protection, and it is doomed to fail.” Mr Solomon said that during the last few years, the number of people waiting months or years for a decision on their right to stay had soared to a record high, thousands had been “rammed into unsafe accommodation for months on end”, and “cruel and harmful” legislation had emerged. “Throughout her time as Home Secretary, Patel has shown brazen and consistent contempt for both domestic and international law, while her attacks on the right to protest have undermined a key pillar of our democracy.
