World Cup 2022: England manager Gareth Southgate has questions ... (Sky Sports)

Several of Englands key players at Euro 2020 are now struggling for form or fitness with the World Cup kicking off on November 20; however, a number of new ...

Southgate has also been handed a timely boost by the return to form of Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford. Also featuring regularly for the Blues is Ruben Loftus-Cheek - could the versatile 26-year-old, who was part of England's 2018 World Cup squad, earn a shock recall after four years away? The former Chelsea striker's impressive goalscoring record since joining Roma at the start of last season should ensure he remains in Southgate's thinking. Along with Ben White - who was an unused player at Euro 2020 - Southgate has options to choose from should he finally decide to move on from Maguire. Fast forward 14 months and all three look primed to play a major role for England in Qatar. Jordan Pickford has had an iron grip on the No 1 shirt since the 2018 World Cup - so much so that Aaron Ramsdale, Nick Pope and Dean Henderson have just 12 caps between them compared to the Everton 'keeper's 45. Injuries have hampered him, but competition from the likes of Rodri and Ilkay Gundogan at club level is likely to limit Phillips' involvement once he is ready to return. The fact that Ten Hag's side have won all four of those games reflects poorly on the pair and leaves Southgate with a big decision to make. With that in mind, perhaps England's goalkeeper situation can be looked at in one of two ways. Southgate may also be slightly perturbed by what he has seen from Mason Mount in the early stages of this season. The most glaring issue facing Southgate as he makes his final plans ahead of the World Cup is what to do with Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw? As for Shaw, fitness has often been used by his critics - rightly or wrongly - as a reason for any drop in performance levels.

I had quite a few jobs to pay for my boots and petrol basically. The England midfielder tweeted: "Back to reality and I love it! But also I'm under no illusions that I'm not going to be able to retire at the end of my career and be fine for the rest of my life. After football you need to make sure you have something set up, ready for that transition." We're painted to be professional sports people and you play in leagues where the perception is that everyone is professional, but if everyone was professional the standard would go up." England finish qualifiers with perfect 10 as Stanway sparks ... (The Guardian)

England beat Luxembourg 10 to finish their qualifying campaign top of Group D with 10 wins from 10 matches having scored 80 goals and conceded none.

A lot of these players were involved in the Euros and were committed. Winning the Euros was done by 23 players and also by the prep camps 28.” By the close, a host of England’s fringe players had made their mark, rewarded for the part they played from the sidelines at the Euros as Wiegman and her staff stuck to their tried and tested formula. It took 11 minutes for England to break the deadlock, but the goal should have come sooner. “You think about performing, about how the players come in and what’s next,” said Wiegman. It was not quite the homecoming the FA would have wanted for the team’s first home game since winning Euro 2022.

England hit double figures again to round off World Cup qualifying (Chard & Ilminster News)

Georgia Stanway and Beth England scored twice apiece in a 10-0 rout of Luxembourg in Stoke.

Wiegman made three changes at the break, including replacing Russo with England – who took little time to further boost the hosts’ lead, tapping in three minutes after the restart from Mead’s cross. The one-way traffic continued with Daly’s header and Mead’s finish in the 38th and 39th minutes taking the hosts to five, and Schlime doing well to deny Russo again in first-half stoppage time. It then took just over 10 minutes of the match for England’s thorough bossing of possession to lead to a goal, with Russo being fouled by Catherine Have in the box and Stanway slotting the resulting penalty past Lucie Schlime into the corner of the net.

It was nice to see and I hope the people enjoyed it too. Of course there are always areas to improve, but that comes in big games. And England added: “It was always going to be tough after Ellen White. “But I think we played well and scored some great goals. I think we did well against Austria and we just wanted to continue that good form. We certainly did that tonight.

Alex Hales in line for shock England recall at T20 World Cup (The Guardian)

Alex Hales is set to make a dramatic England return in the T20 World Cup after positive talks about ending his three-year exclusion from the set-up.

The 31-year-old was among the senior players who supported Morgan’s decision to exclude Hales back in 2019, with the likes of Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and Ben Stokes also consulted at the time. Those talks were positive, resulting in an end to Hales three-year exclusion from the England set-up. During his subsequent exile, a “breakdown in trust” was often cited by the captain, Eoin Morgan.

It took me a while to figure that out but it’s settled back down now. But the ex-Bradford star is now back on track and will rejoin his beloved Souths as an assistant in November.

England opener back in the fold after three-year absence.

Many of those runs have been scored in overseas franchise leagues, including the Big Bash, in which he has played 45 matches for Sydney Thunder since 2019, with 11 half-centuries and one hundred. He has been named as Jonny Bairstow's replacement for the men's T20 World Cup in Australia, as well as the preceding tour to Pakistan, which gets underway next week. The recall came after a noticeable softening of attitude towards Hales from the team management, particularly in the wake of Eoin Morgan's retirement.
