“The Sixth Form Colleges Association looks forward to working with the new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, and Secretary of State for Education, Kit Malthouse, to ensure that every sixth form student in England receives a word class education. The new Education Secretary has to work with the education sector to improve not only graduate recruitment but the retention of staff. “Every single sixth form college has been judged by Ofsted to be good or outstanding; colleges have an established tradition of excellent student outcomes and destinations, they have experience and expertise in governance and finance, and they are working effectively with families of local schools and universities. We urge the new Education Secretary to focus on what really matters rather than the policy gimmicks and political posturing which often emanate from the government.” The critical and urgent issue that he must address is the dire funding situation facing schools and colleges, as a result of soaring energy bills and pay awards for which there is no additional government funding. Kit Malthouse was previously appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 7 July 2022 to 6 September 2022. They are the essential resources upon which every other ambition and goal relies. - He is the fourth education secretary in just over two months, and the fifth in the past year. - He was elected to Westminster Council in 1998 and became its deputy leader, standing down in 2006. - During his time as policing minister, Malthouse said he believed schools should teach boys how to treat women and girls with respect. - After graduation, Malthouse moved to London and qualified as a chartered accountant, working for Deloitte and Touche. - Like his recent predecessors Michelle Donelan and James Cleverly, Malthouse was first elected in 2015. This is older than the average for education secretaries, but he is a long way off being the oldest.

Earlier this week the MP congratulated Ms Truss on her election as the new Conservative Party leader and becoming PM.
With the appointment of Kit Malthouse as the new education secretary, Sam Freedman wonders if the sector should be concerned about the PM's priorities.
As a new school year starts, the issue that will be top of mind for most leaders is money. Peers forced the removal of the key clauses that would have allowed the DfE to regulate academy trusts directly. That will offer a lot of relief. He certainly has a long list of problems to sort. The last secretary of state who seemed to genuinely care about the topic was Justine Greening, and there have been six others since then. Now, of course, there are plenty of other problems around at the moment.
The MP for North West Hampshire replaces James Cleverly who has been promoted to Foreign Secretary by the new prime minister.
He was subsequently deputy mayor for business and enterprise from 2012 to 2015. Prior to that Nadhim Zahawi was in post, and before that Gavin Williamson who was sacked last September. Before that he was minister for housing between 2018 and 2019.

“The early years is a vital part of the education sector and should be treated as such. In order to remain sustainable and avoid more hikes in parental fees, Mr Malthouse should ensure government funding rates for two-, three- and four-year-olds are given a meaningful boost, then must keep pace with inflation.” Now more than ever, it is vital that the new education secretary works with the sector to ensure that the sector can thrive, and not just survive: this means a focus on investing in the early years, not deregulating it. We will share our First Five Years Count campaign with him, which focuses on raising awareness of this critical window of opportunity and encouraging more talent into the profession. Any package of support for businesses must include childcare providers in both the private and voluntary sectors. Nurseries need to be made exempt from paying business rates and VAT, which would put them on a level playing field with local authority settings and schools.
