"It was a scam," he said in the video. He explained: "Long and short of it was he explained to me that someone had been into the Crewe branch and had attempted to withdraw money. Adam and his wife have run their bar, Dexter & Jones for a number of years. "Naively, I didn't know you could ghost phone numbers," he said. The thing was, they even knew how much money was in my bank account. It's hard to look my wife in the eye. He said the only way that person could do that was using my driving licence and my passport and my signature." He then rang his wife and asked her to check if his passport and driving licence were at the house, which they were. After a back and forth including multiple phone calls, Adam went into the banking app on his phone and found a huge sum had left his account. When asked if it was him, Adam said "No," which left him worrying that this was a case of identity theft. The elaborate scam began with a text claiming to be from Adam’s bank, Barclays, which said there had been "suspicious activity" on his account and that a member of the fraud investigations team would be ringing him. He was told he needed to make a dummy payment to test their fraud reaction systems and that Barclays may need to close his bank account - something that would have severely impacted his business. All the while, Mr Rickitt had checked the man’s identity on Linkedin, was ringing the official Barclays fraud number and was even, at one stage, transferred to the scammer’s ‘manager’. Mr Rickitt said he was rung back by the man after having tried the official Barclays fraud line on a friend’s phone. Over a period of two to three hours on the phone, the actor said he was guided through the same security questions he usually gets asked by his bank. The message said he would be getting contacted by a member of their fraud team, and a call from an 0845 number duly came through - a number which matched the official Barclays fraud line listed on the bank’s website. In an Instagram post from 2 September, Adam Rickitt revealed he had been the victim of a fraud scam.
