Apple Watch Ultra Hands-On: Everything You Need to Know (CNET)

There are some new apps for the Ultra: A new Oceanic Plus diving app is specifically made for the Watch Ultra that looks at tides and water temperature; it also records dive depths and metrics. The extra cost, however, means it won't be a watch most people opt for. The new Compass app's unique Ultra ability to save waypoints and show walk-back directions without a cellular signal, using only GPS, could be one of the Ultra's biggest draws. The Ultra's biggest new feature, a significantly larger battery, is something the Apple Watch hasn't had since it debuted. Apple used to only launch one watch a year, but the Apple Watch SE introduced a more affordable model to the mix. Who is the Ultra for? Last year, an expected watch redesign never materialized, although Apple did increase the watch screen size. Also, it's by far the biggest Apple Watch of the lineup. The Apple Watch Ultra goes in the opposite direction: It's more expensive, but unlike previous fashion-driven Edition watches, the Ultra is aiming for function... The new design pushes its crown and side button into an extended side part that, alongside the new watch's bigger case and curved-with-flat-display contours, make it seem more James Cameron than any previous Apple Watch. Featuring a rugged design complete with two physical buttons (customisable in the watch settings) and a more tactile dial, the Watch Pro is WR100 rated for water-resistance, EN1339 certified for diving and designed for depths of up to 130ft, and it's made from a new titanium alloy for maximum durability.

Apple Watch Ultra initial review: Rugged and ready (Pocket-lint.com)

Apple has a new rugged Watch in town - the Apple Watch Ultra. Here are our first impressions.

Whether it can compete with the Garmin Fenix models of the extreme sports wearables remains to be seen for now, but if the battery claims are accurate and the Watch Ultra performs with the accuracy its past siblings have been renowned for, it could be the Apple Watch to watch. The Apple Watch Ultra has the largest display of the Apple Watch models offered and it is the brightest too at 2000nits - the same as the iPhone 14 Pro. The Apple Watch Ultra is the Apple Watch Series 8 on steroids, plus so much more. The Apple Watch Ultra runs on watchOS 9, which brings with it a host of features, including more advanced sleep tracking with sleep stages. This is still a far cry from the Garmin Fenix's of the rugged smartwatch world, but substantially better than the Apple Watch has offered in the past. It is also LTE, with no GPS-only model available, as there is with the Series 8 and it has an operating temperature between -20-degrees celcius to 55-degrees celcius. It's certainly a statement and this is a watch that isn't going to go unnoticed - but we really liked the flat display and the chunkiness of this device. This feature will likely be more useful in the Watch Series 8 though as the Watch Ultra may not be a device you want to sleep with, much like the The accelerometer has been upgraded since the Series 7, offering up to 256g-forces instead of 32g-forces, and there is a body temperature sensor too. Titanium is said to be more resistant to scratches and drops, which should in theory make the Apple Watch Ultra more suitable for the rough terrain environments it's pitched towards. The casing moves from aluminium and stainless steel - both of which the Series 8 is offered in - to titanium like the older Apple Watch Edition. There's also an added customisable button on the left edge, which is bright orange and can be used to start a workout, a new dive, or a new segment, for example.
