Unlike many of his cabinet colleagues, he did not step down from his job in the Department for International Trade in July in the days leading up to Boris Johnson’s announcement that he intended to stand down as prime minister once a new Tory leader is found.

Ranil Jayawardena has become the new Defra Secretary following a reshuffle by Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Mr Eustice, who had been Defra Secretary since February 2020, said that it had been a 'privilege' to work within the department for the past nine years. "As farming minister and more recently as Secretary of State, George - a farmer himself - has been an almost constant presence in Defra for 9 years," she said. Responding to his new role, Mr Jayawardena said it was a 'privilege' to be appointed the Secretary of State for Defra.
