Her commitment to the Commonwealth was a constant - she visited every Commonwealth country at least once. Through the war, she exchanged letters with her third cousin, Philip, Prince of Greece, who was serving in the Royal Navy. She immediately returned to London as the new Queen. But there were periods of private and public pain. After turning 18, Elizabeth spent five months with the Auxiliary Territorial Service and learned basic motor mechanic and driving skills. For Justin Trudeau, Canada's prime minister, the Queen was a constant in Canadians' lives and one of his "favourite people in the world". "No institution… To France's president, Emmanuel Macron, she was a "kind-hearted Queen" and "friend of France". In a moment met with cheers from huge crowds in the Mall, she was joined by three generations of her family on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the finale of a pageant. Between them, they gave their parents eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Her son King Charles III said the death of his beloved mother was a "moment of great sadness" for him and his family and that her loss would be "deeply felt" around the world. During the coming period, he said he and his family would be "comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which the Queen was so widely held".

Queen Elizabeth II: Royal Family gathers at Balmoral amid concerns ... (BBC News)

The Queen's four children and Prince William are now in Scotland to be with her - Prince Harry is also on his way.

But the Queen had suffered from mobility issues recently and so the meeting was moved to Balmoral. The Queen is also the monarch of Australia. One woman I spoke to had travelled from west London. Prince William, the Queen's grandson and second in line to the throne, is on his way there, while his wife Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, has remained in Windsor as her children are on their first full day at their new school. The plane that's landed in Aberdeen was carrying the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke of York and the Earl and Countess of Wessex, the BBC understands. She's a national treasure." A growing band of television cameras and reporters are gathering at the scene, as well as a small number of onlookers. The scene at the gates of Balmoral The rain is hammering down here at the gates of Balmoral. Several members of the Queen's immediate family are already at Balmoral to be by her side. She says: "I think it's quite scary that we don't know what's going to happen."
