Where is Numenor? 'Rings of Power's most important location ... (Inverse)

In its third episode, 'The Rings of Power' finally takes viewers to Númenor. Here's what you should know about the legendary island kingdom of Men.

The island’s first king was Elros, the Half-elven son of Eärendil and twin brother of Elrond (Robert Aramayo). To honor their efforts and losses, the Edain were given Númenor by the Valar, essentially the angels of Middle-earth. [The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power](https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/lord-of-the-rings-the-rings-of-power-review-amazon) was its promise to finally bring [the island kingdom of Númenor](https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/amazon-lord-of-the-rings-show-gondor) to life. That was a surprise to fans, especially considering [Númenor’s importance](https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/rings-of-power-trailer-easter-egg-game-changing-disaster) to both the show’s story and the entirety of [the Second Age of Middle-earth](https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/rings-of-power-second-age-timeline). Elendil takes Galadriel and Halbrand to Númenor and puts them in front of the kingdom’s queen regent, Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), and Pharazôn (Trystan Gravelle), one of Míriel’s closest advisors. Galadriel’s first meeting with Míriel doesn’t go well, but the episode effectively establishes Númenor as a powerful and unique — if divisive — location.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: Miriel, her father, and ... (GamesRadar+)

So let's dive into what the show tells us – as well as book spoilers from Tolkien's work – to paint a picture of the Kings of Numenor and what could end up ...

Miriel’s father may yet live in The Rings of Power – but he could be at the heart of the fall of one of the Second Age’s great empires. We only know he kept the Hall of Lore intact and that he was usurped due to his loyalty to the Elves. By the time of the show, Miriel – or Tar-Miriel, to give her the full title – is now the Queen Regent of Numenor, replacing her father on the throne. The kingdom’s first king Elros, for example, was the half-brother of Rings of Power protagonist Elrond. In Tolkien’s works, Miriel’s father was Tar-Palantir, the 24th king of Numenor. The island kingdom of Numenor is introduced and, with it, the Queen Regent Miriel and an obscured family relationship that could have major ramifications for Middle-earth to the east.

What will become of the island kingdom introduced in LOTR: The Rings of Power episode 3? Here's what happens to it in Middle-earth lore.

In The Lord of the Rings, the Reunited Kingdom functioned as a merging of Arnor and Gondor. Later in the Second Age, Pharazôn (the queen’s chief advisor and Trystan Gravelle’s Rings of Power character) became king and learned of As explained by Galadriel in The Rings of Power, Númenor is a product of the Great War that occurred in the First Age. This island kingdom was the primary setting of Galadriel and Halbrand’s story in The Rings of Power episode 3. Clearly, characters associated with the kingdom are about to become integral to the overarching story for Amazon’s live-action Lord of the Rings show. Elendil, Isildur, Ar-Pharazôn the Golden, Queen-Regent Míriel, and Eärien all look to be involved in some capacity, with at least a few taking part in their adventures directly. 'Numenor,' Explained: Who Was Elros? Why Did Numenorians ... (Digital Mafia Talkies)

In "The Rings Of Power," Elros, more commonly known as Tar-Minyatur, was a Half-Elven whose ancestry consisted of both mortals and Elves.

Born in 3119 of the Second Age (of Numenor), Elendil was the son of a chieftain named Amandil, who led the Faithful. But we can expect this veil to be revealed in the next episode to see how the series will show the downfall of Numenor or the arrival of Evil. If Nimloth was uprooted, the kingdom of the Numenorians would be destroyed. These Kings of Numenor traded far away from the Elves in the south. The Faithful, in turn, built the city of Pelargir, which later became Gondor. But later, the Men became bitter with the Elves from the reign of Tar-Minastir. Elros was born in the middle of the First Age, but due to an attack by Feanor, Elros and his brother Elrond were captured by Maglor, under whom Elros and his brother grew up. The Middle Men were sometimes aggressive towards the High Men of Numenor. But under Meneldur’s order, cutting down the trees of Numenor was forbidden for shipbuilding. Elros was the son of Earendil and his wife, Elwing, and the brother of Elrond. Numenor was the kingdom of men. So, he was put in the race of ‘High Men.’ During Elros’ reign, the Eldar enriched the kingdom of Numenor with flowers, fruits, birds, and trees.

Galadriel visits Halbrand in the dungeons and notes that he doesn’t belong on the island - but he notes that neither does she. Halbrand notes that they are stuck on Númenor and that she is short an army, but she reveals that that is about to change. Arondir manages to bring down a structure on some Orcs and the sunlight harms the rest. However, Elendil notes that the past is dead and they either move on or die with it as there is nothing on the Western shores for them. In Númenor, Galadriel escapes the custody of the palace and makes her way to the harbour to escape. Elendil shows Galadriel an account from a human spy in the enemy camp and she notices that the symbol she has seen previously was no sigil but was instead a map of the Southlands. Revion goes to drink and Arondir follows, followed by Mèdhor before his throat is slashed by an Orc and he dies in the arm of Arondir. The Queen Regent questions his decision to bring an elf into the kingdom for the first in generations, but Elendil notes that "the sea is always right". Revion speaks up in defence of the tree they wish to destroy and is applauded for his strength by an Orc before being awarded a water ration. The ship docks and they disembark, with Halbrand being shocked at the grandeur of Númenor, with Galadriel noting that his ancestors stood with Morgoth but Númenor stood with the Elves before eventually breaking off contact.
