We know how much the Queen loved sport, and the show must go on.’ ‘Most of the conversations that I had were with the England and Wales Cricket Board and we both felt that bringing people together at this particular time, having both had the honour and respect of the day of cancellation on Friday, was the right decision and the right thing to do. England v South Africa: third Test, day three – live! (The Guardian)

Jansen stuck around and top scored for 30 and Zondo showed some potential with a fighting 23, but it's a sorry scorecard for the Proteas who have just recorded ...

That is a dreadful shot from Mulder, regardless of the context of the game. Anderson comes back into the attack and starts with a maiden to Jansen. What a session for England as they ripped out the South African top order. The final ball of the first over of the session kicks enough off a back of a length and takes the shoulder of Zondo’s blade. Jansen is takes three runs – first with a couple through cover and another down the ground – before Maharaj scampers a single to get off the mark with a cheekily scampered run. Jansen is more circumspect and is able to ride the bounce with more comfort. 35th over: South Africa 110-9 (Rabada 6, Nortje 0) Rabada’s gentle and well timed flick through midwcket for three suggested that the remaining Saffas might concentrate and drag out as many runs as they can. The South African’s half heartedly go up for a catch at backward point but the TV replay shows Crawley thunked it into the ground first. 2nd over: England 10-0 (Lees 6, Crawley 4) Marco Jansen (the missing lovechild of Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Alan Mullally?) is going to send down his south-paw slingers from the other end. Sun out at The Oval and a very appreciative crowd, cheering every run and oohing and ahhhing almost every ball. 8th over: England 35-1 (Crawley 5, Pope 16) Shot! 10th over: England 44-2 (Pope 22, Root 1) Joe Root does his road runner thing as he scampers out onto the field, legs pumping like a pistons.

Zondo gets off the mark in his second Test with a poke through point for a single. Broad pins Zondo with the final ball of the over and, to his credit, he seems the most reluctant to send it upstairs. A seventh over for Robinson, which may be his last, however hungry he will be for another 5Wi. Anderson tightens his line and Zondo works it away square for a single. The next ball is shorter and Jansen fiddles it off his hip for a single. Anderson carries on for the final over before lunch on an incident-rich morning for England. Broad lured Jansen on to the rocks of a drive and he got quite a chunk of it but Foakes spilled it to his right. Robinson returns and Jansen drives straight past him for two, the bowler pitching it up. Heart in mouth moment for Maharaj who leaves on line and the ball zips back from outside off and clears middle and leg by barely an inch. Left-arm quick, over the wicket, Jansen ducks it back in to Lees through the gate as the opener tried to press it through mid on with a tight grip. Maharaj throws the bat into a cut and scythes it through point for four. Maharaj rotates through a pull above the ball when Broad bangs one in and ducks another bouncer.

The three-match series is currently level at 1-1 and it would be interesting to see whether a result would be possible in the third Test as there are just three days remaining. It is important to note that England had won the toss and elected to bowl in the third Test. Earlier, the first day was washed out due to rain while there the second day was called off in memory of Queen Elizabeth II who died on Thursday.

"To walk down those stairs, every single player commented on how special it was to walk down: You could hear a pin drop. Ben Stokes came and went quickly with the ultra-attacking approach we have become accustomed to not paying off on this occasion. Despite the frustrations of the fans, that proved to be it for day three and Foakes (11no) and Robinson (3no) will resume on Sunday morning as England try to build a more substantial lead. Root came out to join Ollie Pope, who was batting with all the confidence of a man who averaged 88.54 on his home ground, and for a time the pair seemed to go shot for shot as the home crowd roared their approval. It was left to Broad to wrap up the innings with the wickets of Keshav Maharaj (18) and Anrich Nortje (7). With plans to honour the Queen prior to the start of play, the vast majority of a capacity crowd were in their seats early and a hush fell over the ground as a military guard of honour was formed.

England v South Africa: live score and latest updates from day 4 (Telegraph.co.uk)

A change at last, Stokes gives Jimmy a breather and brings himself on.

After day one was lost to rain, and day two cancelled out of a mark of respect for the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the match began yesterday. All eyes will be on Foakes then as he tries to shepherd the team to something like a total. Tall left armer, gets it to angle in to the right handed bat, gets bounce and swing. Another good ball later in the over leaves the batsman, Elgar hopping and popping at the ball. Off the fourth ball, Foakes tucks Rabada off the hip for a single. Erwee shovels the second delivery away to leg for a welcome two runs that spares him the pair. They needed just 13 minutes to get rid of the last three England wickets, and have now dug in sensibly to reach 70 for just the lost of opener Erwee. He told Sky at the weekend: "He is a hero of mine. Third ball of the over, Broad jags one back and traps Elgar on the crease. Amazing how green the Oval square is at the end of a dry summer... Broad, perhaps tiring a little as he is in the 8th over of this spell, with a short ball. Half-powered ball form Broad completes the over, a diffident whiff at it from Mulder, and a half-hearted appeal that is soon quashed.
