Frozen Planet II review – TV so relentlessly wondrous that you'll feel ... (The Guardian)

That's Sir David Attenborough speaking. You knew that. The opening montage of Frozen Planet II (BBC One) lays out the promise of pandas, penguins and polar ...

About global warming (the Arctic is heating up twice as fast as the rest of the world), the melting ice (the summer floes polar bears depend on could be gone by 2035 and the ice being lost in Greenland alone is responsible for a quarter of the rise in global sea levels), the suffering ecosystems, the dying oceans and all the terrible rest of it. Your eyes widen involuntarily as the scenes of howling gales, frozen peaks and troughs, and the animals wrenching a life from them sweep past. He is a cat for our times and I want an animated series about his accidental arrival in Florida, abundant merch and Twitter clips of him staring out of the screen with contempt for us all. To avert the risk of falling victim to Stendhal syndrome, numbed by the relentless beauty of it all, the sweeping majesty is carefully punctuated with lighter moments. It is, like every episode of the original and of Blue Planet and Planet Earth before it, an hour of wonders. The accumulated skills and wisdom of decades enable them to capture these extraordinary images and put them together with a grace that is seemingly effortless.

Frozen Planet II, review: BBC's latest wildlife documentary is ... (The Independent)

Now, the BBC is back with its latest colossal undertaking, Frozen Planet II, a five-episode series sifting through the snow and peering beneath the ice sheets ...

As has often been the case, the most compelling part of this new Frozen Planet is the behind-the-scenes segment at the end. But for all the beauty, the thrill of seeing stories from the natural world is somewhat diminished here. It focuses, in this first episode, on the drone team in Greenland, awaiting the break-off of mammoth pieces of ice. “Only a few escape.” But while the brutal hunting sequences are electric, the series is uneven. This sequence is shot, and scored, like a horror movie, the pod of whales cracking the ice in order to displace their blubbery quarry. It is a theme that will recur throughout the episode, from the calving of a giant iceberg in Greenland to a polar bear moping on a shrinking ice floe. Not really – the action quickly moves to the choppy waters of the nearby ocean, where a pack of killer whales are stalking a seal. Now, the [BBC](/topic/bbc) is back with its latest colossal undertaking, Frozen Planet II, a five-episode series sifting through the snow and peering beneath the ice sheets of our vast glacial landscapes. When the first iteration of Frozen Planet was released in 2011, it confined discussion of imminent climatic disaster to its final episode – now, it will be a running theme throughout. It’s not long before we’re in the midst of a flock of hardy emperor penguins, the only bird tough – or stupid – enough to breed during the Antarctic winter. But above all else, this country is incontrovertibly the market’s premier provider of wildlife documentaries, from There are few things of which Britain is a world-leading exporter these days.

Frozen Planet II, BBC1, review: Another stunning call to arms ... (iNews)

Penguins, tigers, Pallas's cats and killer whales all made an appearance in the opening episode of Sir David Attenborough's stunning sequel.

A little Tom-and-Jerry-esque editing of him hunting voles in the barren Great Steppe of central Europe is more than a mood lifter. With less than 500 left in the wild, it is extraordinary to see this majestic giant tracking the scent of prey that has long moved on. In Antarctica, in temperatures that drop to minus 80°C, we are greeted by the familiar sight of regal emperor In the spring, their work is abruptly complete and they totter away forever, leaving their offspring to go it alone. Sumptuous camera work, breathtaking scenery, and absorbing storytelling work together to illuminate miraculous life that survives every day, against the odds, in the harshest possible of environments. It is inevitable and appropriate that the spectre of the climate crisis looms large over the new six-part series, which extends its scope beyond Antarctica and the Arctic to take in the world’s icy peaks, snowy deserts and frosted forests.
