The tradition of lying in state stretches back to the 17th century when Stuart sovereigns lay in state for a number of days. It was the first lying in state where members of the public were subjected to a security check, which slowed the movement of the mourners. The last person to lie in state in the UK was the Queen Mother in 2002. On top of her coffin in Westminster Hall was her coronation crown, set with the Koh-i-noor diamond, and a handwritten message from her daughter, the Queen, reading: “In loving memory, Lilibet”. It is likely that the Queen’s children or even grandchildren will honour her with a vigil and join the guard over the coffin at some point – a tradition which has been called the Vigil of the Princes. Westminster Hall is the oldest building the parliamentary estate, it dates back to 1099 and has been the site of key events, such as the trial of Charles I, coronation banquets, and addresses by world leaders.

During Lying-in-State, the coffin rests on a raised platform (catafalque) in the middle of Westminster Hall. Consisting of up to 1,500 pieces of stained glass, the Diamond Jubilee window can be seen in the three central panels of the north window in Westminster Hall. The Clock Tower was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012 – The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year – as a tribute to Her Majesty and in recognition of her, then, 60-year reign. You will see other Jubilee tributes to Her Majesty as you exit Westminster Hall at the end of your visit. This was the entrance used by The Queen when she arrived for State Openings of Parliament and its gateway was designed to be wide enough to allow the Royal Coach to drive through it. Her Majesty attended all but three State Openings of Parliament during her long reign and on each of these occasions delivered the Queen’s Speech in person.
