Her famous portrayal of Mrs McClusky is one that will be fondly remembered by all those that grew up watching Grange Hill. Her other credits included Heartbeat, Holby City and Father Brown, and in 2013 she was cast as the mother of Welsh comic Greg Davies’ character in Channel 4 comedy Man Down. Although she secured regular work and appeared in a series of TV dramas, her career accelerated after being cast in the children’s series Grange Hill, about life in a comprehensive school.

Powell, who hailed from Manchester, landed her first TV big TV role in 1971 dystopian drama series The Guardians. Lacey revealed that Powell died on Thursday September 8 in Brighton, the same day as the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Beaming from ear to ear, she was, delighted at all the love for the show and for her. Had the good fortune to meet Gwyneth Powell at a Grange Hill fan event a few years ago.
