Spurs have the rare opportunity for back-to-back Champions League victories without any match in between.
Winning on the road is always tough in the Champions League, but coming home with six points through two matches would be an excellent place to be. Sporting is not exactly dominating domestically, with a modest 3-1-2 start in the league including a 0-3 loss to Porto. The Spurs academy product joined Sporting in the winter and has been a consistent presence in the lineup. This is a bit of a unique situation as Tottenham’s trip to Manchester was called off over the weekend, leaving the club with consecutive Champions League fixtures without anything in between. Antonio Conte has the luxury of four great attackers but the challenge of figuring out how to best deploy them. With all of the fixture congestion that lies ahead, having that strong start would be a huge benefit in the future.

84 mins: Dayot Upamecano has been a force of nature for Bayern Munich tonight. 87 mins: Bayern Munich win a corner and look to hold it in the corner with Thomas Muller. 90 mins: Three minutes of added time to play at the Allianz Arena. Coverage tonight continues with Bayern Munich vs Barcelona Bayern 2-0 Barcelona It’s another defeat away at the Bundesliga champions for Barcelona. That is why this wasn’t anything like the 8-2 for Barca, or even last season’s humblings, but it was a reality check. The German club once again subjected [Barcelona ](https://www.independent.co.uk/topic/barcelona-fc)to a reality check, although this 2-0 was a little different to their previous four straight wins. They also had the exceptional Jamal Musiala, who ran the game, and may now run this team in the Pole’s absence. 90+4 mins: Bayern Munich win the game! Tottenham had failed to test the Sporting goalkeeper Antonio Adan throughout the match. It was followed moments later by a wonderful solo goal from Arthur as the Premier League side fell apart.

Spurs have started on the front foot and Son wins a corner on the left-hand side. Conte has stuck with 10 of the 11 that beat Marseille, with Davies in for Lenglet on the left of the back three the only change. 35th minute: Nuno has had a lively half down the Sporting left and he forces Davies to clear for a throw-in. 4th minute: Dicey stuff at the back there from Sporting and Son could be in. 24th minute: Kane looks for Richarlison and finds him as Reis loses his footing trying to cut out the lofted pass. Wingback Emerson is the man arriving and his header forces a save from Adan. 48th minute: Kane gets down the left channel and delivers a quality cross. Son is the latest player to enjoy a chance thanks to Kane's ingenuity. 74th minute: Emerson plops a useless cross into Adan's arms and Conte is demanding answers on the touchline. But when the 23-year-old left Tottenham defenders trailing in his wake in Lisbon, it was easy to remember those quotes and think Pochettino might have had a point. Kane was the provider for Spurs’ best two chances of the match early in the second half, with a left-wing cross and a quick free-kick picking out Emerson Royal. Fulltime: Sporting's late show brings Tottenham and their early season enthusiasm crashing back down to earth in the space of three minutes.
The Inside Track brings you the best in betting tips as it previews the second gameweek in the UEFA Champions League as Tottenham Hotspur travels to Lisbon.
Having drawn to Braga and lost at Porto last month, Ruben Amorim's side started strongly with a 3-0 win at home to the Europa League champions - who many have tipped to be a banana-skin in Europe's top club competition. They have a win percentage of 31% having picked up nine wins in 29 outings and are winless in all six Champions League matches against English sides. Son Heung-min has not exactly had the best of starts to the new season which has led to comments from Conte which are understandable. Spurs last faced Portuguese opponents in the Europa Conference League qualifying phases back in August 2021 and have not lost to a side from Portugal in 60 years. Notable performances against Chelsea and Fulham have showed how the mental approach in the side has changed drastically under Conte's supervision - much to the delight of the fans. Spurs fought well against a tough Marseille side at home last week while the Primera Liga runners-up saw off Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt.

56 min: A little bit of time and space for Edwards to the left of the D. 45 min +1: Edwards picks up the ball to the right of the centre circle, his back to goal. [Sporting](https://www.theguardian.com/football/sporting-lisbon) box from the left wing. With Son in space in the middle, he opts to shoot across Adan and towards the top right instead. 58 min: Richarlison sashays in from the right and goes for the low curler towards the bottom left. The ball pings back off Reis and into the keeper’s arms. 69 min: Edwards skedaddles down the left and fizzes a low ball into the Spurs six-yard box. Emerson swings a cross in from the right. Porro swings the free kick in from the right, and it’s a doddle for Lloris. Easy for Lloris in the end, but Spurs were a little out of formation there. 80 min: Edwards scurries down the middle of the park and slips a pass wide right for Porro, who only just gets a cross away before the ball rolls out for a goal kick. Pedro Porro nearly scored in the last minute with a sensational curler.
Sporting trying to build play across their backline, but they are struggling to progress beyond the halfway line.
I spent a long time here in Sporting and it took some time to come back. Tottenham's Pot One opponents are Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt, so it would take something of a collapse in order for Spurs not to qualify for the knockout stages. Sporting win a couple of fouls in midfield to stem the tide, but only temporarily. Spurs try to work a short one, with Bentancur finding Hojbjerg on the left flank, and they win another corner. Better from the home team and a reminder they carry a threat. Sporting with a sustained attack but Dier defends his near post well on the cross from the left, before Emerson Royal wins a foul. Trincao shot wide from the edge of the D when he had Edwards to his right. Pochettino was blamed for likening him to Messi as a youngster at Spurs, but that was worthy of the comparison. Adan gets a palm to it, but in truth heading it into the ground took the power out of it. Dier then finds Richarlison's diagonal run with a fine piece of distribution from the back, but the flag goes up for offside again. Kane could have tried to cross for Son with his left foot, but took the shot on. Lloris perhaps saved his best stop until last to keep out Pedro Porro shot, but from the resulting corner substitute Paulinho got in front of Kane and above Royal to head the stoppage-time winner.

Up front Richarlison is in fine form and Son and Kane will be looking to spark their relationship back to life alongside and with him. The centre-back talked up former Spurs youngster Marcus Edwards in his press conference ahead of the game and the attacker will be desperate to show Tottenham what they missed. That's for another day though and Tottenham must focus on tonight. For Spurs, Kane and Son are struggling with their final touch, the former particularly. Spurs have Lloris to thank after stopping Edwards from netting against his former club. Sporting have looked dangerous going forward and ex-Spurs youngster Marcus Edwards has impressed. That half didn't start the way Sporting were expecting. Sporting have plenty of quality and Conte will need to ensure his side are switched on from start to finish if they are to make it back-to-back wins to start the group stages. Tottenham are not going to have as much of the ball, particularly in the first half, and how much quality those three can show as they break up the pitch, along with the wing-backs and one of the midfielders is going to be key to the direction this match takes. Harry Kane chance as Richarlison plays him down the left and he fires an effort across that the keeper parries. (18+, new customers only, T&C’s) Richarlison rounds the keeper and puts the ball in the net but he's a long way offside.

Tottenham suffered their first defeat of the season and a former academy graduate played a key role in their Champions League downfall.
“When you arrive you have to try to fill the box and to be accurate and strong to attack the goal. I think we could score and we tried to win the game. Popped up in a couple of dangerous positions to score but lacks the killer instinct in those areas that Conte craves in his wing-backs. Emerson Royal – Flashed a dangerous ball across the six-yard-box but none of Tottenham’s trio of attackers were ready to attack it. Hugo Lloris – Made an excellent early save on the stretch to prevent a Pedro Goncalves shot from sneaking into the bottom corner and his handling was solid. As for Spurs, it was a night to forget and one that could not be put down to weariness after Saturday’s match with Manchester City was called off.

80min: Another poor touch from Kane lets down a good opportunity to break. With both sides claiming a victory during their opening games, this looks like a crucial clash in defining who progresses out of Group D as winners. Unbeaten Tottenham, meanwhile, are yet to blow onlookers away this season but look as dogged as one might expect of an Antonio Conte team.
