They are in response to the King’s decision to name his son William as Prince of Wales in his first speech as monarch last Friday. He was sent to study at the University of Aberystwyth, where he learned to speak Welsh, in the 1960s. The warm welcome was seen as the King and Queen Consort travelled to the city center for a Service of Prayer and Reflection at Llandaff Cathedral and at the conclusion of the service as they headed for a visit to the Welsh Parliament, the Senedd. At the conclusion of the service the couple then travelled to the Senedd, where he gave an address. At one point along the journey the King stopped the convoy of cars to enable him to get out and greet members of the public. He said it was an honour to be Prince of Wales and that his son William, who takes on the title, had a “deep love” for the nation.

The King and Queen Consort then signed the visitor book, before meeting members of the crowds who gathered near to the cathedral. His Majesty arrived by helicopter and travelled by state limousine in bright sunshine to the service, which was also attended by Prime Minister Liz Truss and leading figures from Wales. He arrived in Cardiff with the Queen Consort on Friday morning to attend a service of prayer and reflection for the life of Queen Elizabeth II at Llandaff Cathedral.

Her skills of diplomacy are well known but she had the ability to relate to the man/woman on the ‘Clapham Omnibus’ or perhaps the Merthyr Tydfil Omnibus – to the person on the street, with an attentiveness that made you feel you were understood and valued.
