However, it was later revealed that none of the bodies were Brannick’s wife, but Joe Harkin and David Corry, two of Goliath’s original suspected victims. While Brannick investigated with his partner DS Niamh McGovern, they suspected a cover-up in the original case. The series ended with Brannick killing the only people who could have identified him as Goliath, with the police only having his word to go on when they arrived. However, the biggest shock of the series came when it was finally revealed that Brannick himself was Goliath and had been coerced into killing two men when Emma’s life was threatened. It was thought that Goliath had been a serving police officer in the 1990s and that one of his suspects had been Brannick’s wife, Emma, who had also been an agent of a special branch of the police. Bloodlands series one saw Brannick, an officer with the Northern Irish police force, spring into action when it was suspected a legendary assassin, known as Goliath, was behind a new crime – the kidnapping of Patrick Keenan.

Reasonably satisfying as the answer was to the question of whether Brannick was a killer, the fact that it has been dealt with does rather jam a stick in the spokes of season two. The new run does what it must, which is to give Brannick a new secret. The latter reaches a peak in a laugh-out-loud scene where Brannick, McGovern and Olivia get into a Mexican standoff of meaningful stares. Without that veneer of seriousness, the show’s real identity as a genre piece about an in-too-deep maverick cop is revealed: the conveniently placed clues and particularly the cast’s reliance on pained looks and sly side-eyes becomes hilariously noticeable. A couple of eventful instalments later, and – dizzied by twists, overcome by the whiff of red herrings – we were somehow excited to be told that Brannick was Goliath after all. A hit duly followed, nicely dark and paranoid in tone, with a narrative that pulled off the classic whodunnit trick of making us forget the most likely answer to the riddle.

Cut to the greyer, craggier Nesbitt of today as Brannick – miraculously still a serving police officer – drove to inspect a fresh murder victim. Getting to the root of this relationship may prove to be the most compelling reason to continue watching. He recognised the corpse as that of an accountant, Colin Foyle, from a shared dishonourable past, presumably concerning that misappropriated gold bullion. After executing them and checking that the cases contained gold bars and assault weapons, the mysterious figure ripped off his balaclava to reveal a youthfully photoshopped Nesbitt as Tom Brannick. The white-knuckle drama, focused on a Northern Irish detective with a murky IRA history, returned in full-throttle.

We can’t trust anything that the widow (Victoria Smurfit) says. We can’t trust anything that Brannick says. McGovern is the best thing here, ribbing Brannick about his age when they hear that a witness works in a nightclub: “You should go.
