Prince George and Princess Charlotte had a special role at the state funeral of their late great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, on Monday.

Their attendance was confirmed by Buckingham Palace Sunday night with the release of the order of service for the event. The siblings followed the coffin behind their parents and ahead of their uncle and aunt, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. George, aged 9, and Charlotte, 7, along with their parents, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, are joining world leaders, politicians, public figures and European royals, as well as more than 500 dignitaries from around the world, in mourning Britain's longest-reigning monarch, who died on September 8 at the age of 96.

George, second in line to the throne, and his sister, were youngest mourners at Westminster Abbey service.

Here they were in the bosom of their family. George held his arms by his sides and Charlotte clasped her hands in front of her. Their appearance came amid a narrowing of the royal family’s focus on figures at the top of the direct line of succession, overseen by the King. On Sunday, it was reported that George and Charlotte’s presence was suggested by “senior palace advisers”, with an unnamed official saying George’s presence would be desirable “if only to reassure the nation of the order of succession”. The Duke of Sussex, who was 12 at the time, has said: “I don’t think any child should be asked to do that, under any circumstances.” Charlotte’s presence was a reminder of how the Queen’s reign ended hundreds of years of male primogeniture in the British monarchy.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had planned carefully for the day. Their milestone moments, including birthdays, are shared with the public via photographs taken by the Princess of Wales, and they are increasingly being allowed to take part in very select engagements. In life, she had made sure to include Prince George in photographs with her heirs the then-Prince of Wales, Charles, and William, Duke of Cambridge. Afterward, in the grounds of Windsor Castle, Princess Charlotte shook hands and thanked the Dean politely as their car arrived. They took their rightful place in the procession, through the smaller congregation of the Queen’s family, friends and loyal staff. At the Great West Door of the Abbey, George and Charlotte waited in perfect stillness with their mother as the slow procession of the late Queen’s coffin made its way, accompanied by their father. They were first seen in public travelling by car to Westminster Abbey on Monday morning, driven with the Princess of Wales and Queen Consort, their step-grandmother. The Prince, nine, and his seven-year-old sister were allowed to join the senior Royal family in the procession at Westminster Abbey and St George’s Chapel, side-by-side with parents the Prince and Princess of Wales. Nestled between their parents, the young Waleses seemed calm and confident, having been asked if they wanted to join in with plenty of time to change their minds. Prince George and Princess Charlotte on Monday also took their place in the history books, as they honoured the memory of the great-grandmother they called “Gan-Gan”. Royal fans 'so proud' of Prince George and Princess Charlotte after ... (WalesOnline)

Princess Charlotte and Prince George were among the youngest mourners at a funeral watched by five billion people.

It is not the first time they have been praised for their behaviour during a service at Westminster Abbey. A royal fan on Twitter said: "The Queen must be so proud of them." Charlotte wore a black coat dress with pleats at the back and a small silver horseshoe that had been gifted to her by her great-grandmother pinned on the front. And despite it being a long day for the youngsters in the full glare of public, they have been praised for their "incredible" behaviour. The children sat impeccably during the hour-long service at Westminster Abbey led by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, and later during the committal service at Windsor. The future king and his sister, who are second and third in line to the throne respectively, joined 2,000 guests including kings, queens, presidents and prime ministers.
