Why Prince Philip was not a King - consort titles and roles explained (shropshirestar.com)

With Charles' accession to the throne, his wife of 17 years, Camilla, becomes Queen Consort.

Sir Winston engaged in a series of secret letters with his Lord Chancellor about the prospect of Philip becoming Prince Consort. Royal convention dictates that the wife of a British monarch is given the title Queen Consort. Instead, Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband became consort. A Queen, like a King, is a monarch who reigns over her kingdom. A Queen Consort does not. When King George VI died in 1952, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was no longer Queen Consort as her husband was no longer the reigning monarch.

Why was the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip never the King Consort? (WalesOnline)

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, were married for 73 years yet her husband never took on the role of King Consort, here's why.

Although there have been many Queen Consorts throughout the Royal Familyโ€™s history the title is often shortened to Queen. The Prince consort had been a member of the House of Lords from July 1948, however he declined a life peerage in November 1999 when most hereditary peers were expelled. Talks took place between the UK Government, Buckingham Palace, and members of the Commonwealth, but the title remained Prince Consort, according to Dr Cindy told Abc that in a previously male dominated world the ruling Queen needed to make sure the public recognised her authority as the Head of State. He was not King Consort due to a Royal tradition which dictates that women do not transfer their [Royal](https://www.walesonline.co.uk/all-about/royal-family) titles to their husband. Royal family historian Dr Cindy McCreery believes a long held tradition is behind Prince Philipโ€™s title.
