Am I Being Unreasonable? review – Daisy May Cooper is absurdly ... (The Guardian)

The creator of This Country's new comedy-thriller tries to do too many things to be truly great. But its star is phenomenally funny – and occasionally ...

And what a gift they have in 13-year-old Rush, who has the comic chops and emotional range of an actor twice his age and the kind of chemistry with Cooper that is an absolute joy to watch. “But I want her to like me.” The show’s title is taken from the (in)famous section of the Mumsnet website where people go to ask the question in relation to some huge or minuscule problem and be bombarded with answers that boil down to “Yes, you are!” and “No, you’re not!” in roughly equal measure no matter what the subject. Once you have trained there for a few months you are ready to graduate to the absolute insanity that is Reddit’s Am I the Asshole? “I don’t like Lucy,” says Nic to her husband of the most officious of the mums. She is struggling – again secretly – with her marriage, and trying to recover from the sudden death of her lover. But, though the Mucklowe shade is never quite banished, Nic has more to her.

Radio Times praises the relationship between Nic and Olly. Critics who previewed it by getting copies of the first episode appear to agree that it's good, just not as good as This Country. Hizli had moved from London and found herself working in restaurant, waiting on tables and cleaning toilets, to keep the family afloat. The often dark comedy was based on her and her brother Charlie's experience growing up in Cirencester. The Am I Being Unreasonable title is inspired by Mumsnet and similar forums where people as the question before going on a rant about their husbands, friends, other mums etc. It was like the straw that broke the camel’s back. Daisy May Cooper offers up a tonally distinct yet hit-and-miss series.

Rush's comic timing is excellent, and the dynamic between Ollie and Nic finds the show at its most charming. She at times becomes hard to root for, and when she goes big, like in one toilet scene in episode 2, her performance can be grating. Here her character is in one sense more grounded, yet frequently and purposefully skirts the boundary of likability. Only the first two episodes have currently been made available to preview, so this may not sustain all six, but as of now I remain intrigued. Surprisingly, it's in the laughs that her character sometimes falls short. In Am I Being Unreasonable? She suffers from a daily ennui, spending her time lying on the sofa or avoiding her irascible and eccentric cleaner. Selin Hizli nicely balances out Cooper's broader performance, and the pair's off-screen friendship is evident in their on-screen chemistry. This series, in truth, is less of a thriller than Corden's at first glance, and instead acts as more of a mystery drama. [Am I Being Unreasonable?](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/comedy/am-i-being-unreasonable-release-date/) has been pitched as a comedy thriller, something which is less common. were created by two friends, both of whom also star in the project, and one of whom broke out in a previous sitcom of their own creation.

The new comedy is far from bad television, but it's hard to stay invested in a show that has such little direction. Am I Being Unreasonable,23-09-2022,1,Nic ...

By the end of the sixth episode, it feels like the series has finally set up a decent path to follow, only for it to come to an abrupt finish. Am I Being Unreasonable? She’s at her best when Nic goes off on tangents about how many quiches are needed for a memorial service or the childish presents her mother-in-law buys for Ollie. When we meet Nic, she’s late to drop Ollie off at school because they’ve been watching one of the many Real Housewives shows, and spends the entire walk there cursing their neighbour and fellow mum Suzie (Amanda Wilkin) for not offering them a lift. It makes the reveals and twists feel lacklustre, lowering the stakes at every turn. Over the course of just three series, the hysterical mockumentary about cousins in the backwaters of the Cotwolds from brother and sister writing duo [Charlie and Daisy May Cooper](https://inews.co.uk/essentials/countrys-daisy-may-charlie-cooper-basically-experience-growing-cotswolds-51594?ico=in-line_link) gained a legion of fans, rave reviews and five Baftas.

Am I Being Unreasonable? review: Daisy May Cooper is flawless in ... (The Independent)

Cooper teams up with Selin Hizli for this hilarious Mumsnet-inspired comedy.

Cooper is still only in her thirties, and I simply conclude that in AIBU (as in The Witchfinder last year) she is evolving as an actor and writer far beyond Kerry and beyond playing a mere caricature of herself. The thing about Cooper is that because of the incredible brilliance and success of her first appearance, out of nowhere, in This Country, she is forever going to have to live up to the sacred memory of Kerry Mucklowe (rather like Ricky Gervais, David Brent and The Office). The whole set-up of AIBU has been written by Cooper and Hizli, and the script is intricately structured so as to maintain that balance between reality and deception, past and present, lies and truth – and they succeed admirably. And precisely how gruesome will things get for Nic as her new bestie proceeds to gaslight, blackmail and destroy her (as feels inevitable)? Why, when she meets Dan fleetingly, do the pair have a sort of moment, and he seems keen to spend more time with her? She struggles to make friends in the village, and she is married to a bloke, Dan (Dustin Demri-Burns) who she doesn’t fancy that much, and their love life is sustained by cheesy fantasies. And so the key questions you won’t get an answer to on Mumsnet are posed – and us viewers want answers. and you feeling like when you’re a teenager and the nerves are exposed on your skin”. Apart from Mumsnet, which is harmless enough, she also confides in Jen, and, after far too much white wine, talks to this woman, basically a stranger, about how the one thing missing in her life is a “real, intense passion… Then Nic bonds with a new arrival in the neighbourhood, the single mum Jen ( [Selin Hizli](/topic/selin-hizli)). [Am I Being Unreasonable?](/topic/am-i-being-unreasonable), I assumed it was some satire on the parenting website [Mumsnet](/topic/mumsnet). Oftentimes they seek validation for their actions from their fellow members, by asking “…am I being unreasonable?” Or “AIBU” in the Mumsnet argot.

Lenny Rush praised the representation of disabled character Ollie in new Daisy May Cooper BBC comedy Am I Being Unreasonable?

‘Obviously some shows might be revolved around a kid with a disability and that makes sense if it’s about the disability. I liked that.’ But her life appears to be on the up when she befriends newcomer Jen (Selin Hizli), with her son Ollie (Lenny), also bonding with her new pal’s child. The BBC drama follows Nic (Daisy), who is yearning for her former lover as she struggles with her dead-end marriage and to make friends in a bougie Cotswolds village.
