Republic of Ireland v Scotland: A brief history (RTE.ie)

The Republic of Ireland have made the short trip to Glasgow to take on old friends Scotland in the UEFA Nations League, which is live on RTÉ2 and the RTÉ ...

[Stephen Kenny's](https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2022/0915/1323640-kenny-wasnt-aware-of-kelleher-injury/) side started like a house on fire and were rewarded after Browne bundled in Shane Duffy's header across goal. Please review their details and accept them to load the content. Walters had been standing in an offside position but it wasn't picked up by the match officials. Scotland had qualified for the three previous World Cups before going on to qualify again in 1990. The Scottish full-back Malpas found himself worse off but the free kick was given to Ireland. James McClean came off the bench. Both sides had qualified for the World Cup in Mexico that summer. The Republic of Ireland had gone ahead thanks to a goal from Jonathan Walters as he tapped in a rebound from a David Marshall save. Clinton Morrison and Gary Doherty were partnered up top. Again, Shaun Maloney proved to be the thorn in the Irish sides as his deflected effort escaped the grasp of Shay Given and salvaged an important point in the race to qualify for France. Robbie Keane captained the Republic of Ireland to their first trophy success since winning the Icelandic Triangular Tournament in 1986, thanks to a 1-0 win in front of a sparse crowd at the Aviva Stadium. When the Republic of Ireland travelled to Hampden Park for the return game, they were yet to pick up a win having drawn with both Belgium and Scotland previously.

Scotland v Ireland: How Stephen Kenny needs to approach ... (Buzz.ie)

We could ask the same question of the two teams at Hampden Park tonight. Which is the real Ireland? Which is the real Scotland? We saw Ireland thump the ...

To win the group, Ireland really need to beat Scotland — but I don’t think winning the group is the be-all and end-all of this Nations League campaign. MIX IT UP: We all know that the manager favours a passing game, but there’s no harm in bypassing midfield at times if the ball is on. Finish as high as possible, blood new players and show signs of improvement — those are the priorities. Ireland have to start strong and make the home fans uneasy. SILENCE THE CROWD: During Martin O’Neill’s time in charge, Ireland went to Parkhead and lost 1-0 to Scotland. KEEP THE FAITH: Troy Parrott has played 10 games for Preston North End on loan in the Championship this season but has failed to find the net. He is Ireland’s striker for the next decade. It’s important that they don’t get isolated, that the midfield don’t drop too deep. Hampden Park won’t be a place for the faint-hearted. This is the same Scotland team that have flattered to deceive so often. He is vital at the back and chips in with a fair few goals from set pieces at the other end. MIND THE GAP: Ireland are again without Adam Idah and Aaron Connolly has dropped down to the Under-21s, but there are still potent attackers.

Scotland vs Republic of Ireland - Live updates (Scottish Daily Record)

Hampden is the stage for Scotland's second Nations League clash of three, with Republic of Ireland the visitors.

His response to a question about whether he'd like to stay at Hibs angered the Easter Road faithful. The 30-year-old has since gone on to do well for Brighton and is currently on loan at Fulham. If you're of a Hibs persuasion, you'll likely have tried to forget about Matt Doherty's stint at the club. I think it is a revenge match against the Republic. Most of the players are now playing for either Celtic or Rangers in the Champions League or they're playing down south for big clubs. England is maybe a little smoother because of the embarrassment of riches they’ve got in playing staff. I know he was under pressure at the time but I see him as a very principled man, he knows in his own mind what he wants and seems a decent fella. These guys aren't just down in the Premier League making up the numbers - Nathan Patterson, for me, has been one of Everton's most consistent players. It was a difficult, tricky period for Steve Clarke and Scotland. It is another big night for Steve Clarke's Scotland side as they look to regain top spot in their [Nations League](https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/all-about/nations-league) group. And Josh Doig and Declan Gallagher called up to bulk out the squad. With nine points on the board and six left to play for, three this evening would all but secure top spot before an away day to play Ukraine, again.
