Doncaster Sheffield Airport: MP calls for public inquiry into closure (BBC News)

Don Valley's Nick Fletcher says Doncaster Sheffield Airport's closure is a "ridiculous decision".

In response to the offer of a grant to keep the airport operating, Peel Group said any future proposals did not address the "lack of viability" of the site,. The MP said a public inquiry was needed to "find out what's happened". However, the Labour mayor of South Yorkshire Oliver Coppard said there was "no mechanism I'm aware of about a public inquiry". Airport owner Peel Group said the closure was due to a "fundamental lack of financial viability". "Which business would turn down an offer of public money to cover its losses for the next 13 months while a buyer was sought to actually take the airport off their hands, give them the money that they wanted for the airport and keep their reputation intact? A South Yorkshire MP has called for a public inquiry into the decision to close Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

"The fact that they chose to turn our offer down simply confirms what many of us suspected: that Peel was never serious about finding an alternative and safeguarding the future of DSA." Chairman Robert Hough said he recognised the decision would be a "great disappointment to many". "It is clear that Peel was never seriously interested in looking at the opportunities offered to them which have been developed at pace and in good faith. "I would urge Peel that it is not too late to do the right thing and reconsider their decision for the sake of those employees, businesses and communities directly impacted by this appalling decision. Mr Coppard's office offered Peel money on Friday to keep the airport going into next year. While DSA employs 800 workers, the decision will be further reaching due to the impact on other surrounding businesses and organisations.
