[Phil Collins](https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/tags/phil-collins/) and Genesis are the latest artist to sell the publishing rights and master recordings of their back catalogue. The back catalogue was purchased by Concord. Seeing as though Bob Dylan sold his for around $200 million back in January, the implication is that the price is only going up.

Genesis and Phil Collins sell song rights for $300m as dollar buyers ... (iNews)

They are the latest music stars to cash in on their hit song catalogue with a $300m (£270m) deal. The sterling crash makes deals cheaper for dollar buyers.

“Concord is one of the global leaders in music with whom we have been working for many years… [Stevie Nicks pocketed $100m](https://inews.co.uk/culture/music/fleetwood-mac-wembley-stadium-review-still-going-their-own-way-303005?ico=in-line_link) from publishers Primary Wave for her Fleetwood Mac classics, whilst Colombian sensation Shakira sold her stake in her hits, including “Hips Don’t Lie” to the Hipgnosis songs fund for an undisclosed sum, which also snapped up Blondie’s catalogue. Pink Floyd launched an auction for their catalogue and are seeking a minimum of £420m. But investors are warning that the market has become over-priced. The Genesis/Collins/Rutherford catalogue boasts combined record sales in excess of 250 million copies and contains songs including “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway”, “Sussudio”, “Against All Odds”, “All I Need is a Miracle”, “In the Air Tonight”, “I Can’t Dance”, “That’s All”, “Land of Confusion”, “The Living Years”, “Invisible Touch” and several other hits. [Bruce Springsteen](https://inews.co.uk/culture/music/bruce-springsteen-tour-2023-tickets-dates-european-when-uk-shows-1647900?ico=in-line_link) sold the publishing rights to all his recorded music and songwriting for nearly $500m (£450m), Bob Dylan accepted a $400m (£360m) cheque for his recorded catalogue, whilst Sting banked $300m (£260m) for his hits.

Phil Collins, Genesis Catalogs Sell to Concord (Hollywood Reporter)

A package of Genesis, Phil Collins and some Mike + the Mechanics music assets have sold to Concord.

This story also uses lower multiples in its valuation estimate than that story.) Moreover, since the new package included both the Genesis and the Mike + the Mechanics catalogs, the valuation is substantially larger than the one cited in the earlier story. But for the prior story earlier this year, he emailed the following statement to Billboard: “Over the last three or four years there have been several major deals, with quite a few bidders in the market looking to purchase publishing and recording copyrights, amongst many others we have been approached on several occasions. Genesis hits in the package likely include “That’s All” (1.4 million units), “Invisible Touch” (1.06 million units) and “Land of Confusion,” “In too Deep,” and “Follow You, Follow Me” (all in the 650,000 to 750,000 unit range). Most of the publishing for all three recording acts appear to be administered by Concord. (This estimate is based on full ownership of the artist master recordings, and could be less depending on how much of the catalog is owned by the three recording acts and how much just includes royalty income streams.) Sources say that the sellers had outsize expectations and that when the package was first shopped earlier in the year they were asking for opening bids of at least 250 million British pounds, which on April 30, 2022, would have been about $315 million. In the U.S. It also includes master recordings of Collins’ covers of “A Groovy Kind of Love” and “You Can’t Hurry Love,” all or which have over 1 million song consumption units. [Genesis](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/genesis/), [Phil Collins](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/phil-collins/) and some Mike + the Mechanics music assets have sold to Concord, the company told the Wall Street Journal on Thursday. (This is a different number than used in the previous story because the amount cited in that report also included an estimate for some of his Genesis rights. Specifically, sources say the deal encompassed the artist’s share of the master recordings and publishing. Billboard estimates that the overall package, after the deduction of production and distribution costs, averaged about $12.4 million annually over the last three years in master recording revenue and about $5.5 million in annual publishing revenue. That package, sources says, morphed into a bigger deal that also includes all of the publishing for Genesis and possibly even Mike + the Mechanics, as well as their master recordings rights.

Phil Collins, Genesis Sell Their Catalog for Nine-Figures (wmgk.com)

Phil Collins and Genesis are the latest artists to sell their catalogs for a massive payday of nine-figures.

And ultimately, it was Phil’s abilities as a frontman and songwriter that made this band the behemoth that it became… The band was jamming on the song during soundcheck and Collins was singing variations on the term “paperlate”... And it was the closing song on the last Genesis reunion tour. The video gave a glimpse of the band’s sense of humor. Collins revealed in an interview that “[It] is just about a young teenager that's got a mother fixation with a prostitute that he's just happened to have met in passing and he has such a strong feeling for her and doesn't understand why she isn't interested in him.” Not the stuff that dominates adult contemporary radio, and indeed, this one was a jam for the more rock-based quadrant of their fanbase. It’s one of the few songs that Gabriel had no hand in writing; while the band is credited as co-writers on all the songs, apparently Banks and Rutherford co-wrote the lyrics, and co-composed the music with Collins and Hackett. Tony Banks wrote the lyrics, and it seemed that he knew that the band were coming to some sort of end. Of course, that was with a shortened version of the song; we prefer our “Tonight, Tonight, Tonight” in its full eight minute, fifty one seconds form. He proved that he had the vocal chops on 1976’s ‘A Trick Of The Tail’ and ‘Wind And Wuthering.’ But on ’Seconds Out,’ he proved that he wasn’t just a worthy singer, he was also a worthy frontman (and he only got better as the years went on). But on “Home By The Sea/Second Home By The Sea” -- clocking in at a combined 11 minute plus -- they pointed out that they still had some classic prog rock jams in them. The song dealt with the homeless crisis in England, a topic he’d revisit on his solo song years later, “Another Day In Paradise.” Phil Collins later did a more R&B influenced solo version of this song for his first album, ‘Face Value,’ but the Genesis version is the better one.
