Horner threatens legal action as row over F1 budget cap claims ... (The Guardian)

Red Bull's team principal, Christian Horner, has accused Toto Wolff of 'hugely defamatory, fictitious claims' and threatened legal action against Mercedes.

He insisted he believes his team were within the budget cap set at $145m last year and adamant he would be willing to take action against the comments from rival teams. When the budget cap was imposed it was intended to be the first step in creating a level playing field in the sport, allowing the smaller team to begin the process of closing toward the big three. “I have full confidence in Mohammed, in the way he has conducted himself to this point in terms of being strict and being clear with the rules,” Hamilton said. That said, any breach has yet to be confirmed and the FIA will not comment while it makes its assessment with the conclusions on the teams’ cost submissions expected on Wednesday. Leclerc led the way on the final runs and Hamilton, pushing hard, could not match him but Verstappen, as the last man racing, was on a lap challenging for pole only to be told to pit. A failure to do so would have resulted in him starting at the back of the grid.

"It keeps the competition closer together, it stops manufacturers leaving this business because it is just too expensive. "It is fictitious and we are extremely disappointed. "It is complete rubbish, we heard from the FIA 10 days ago asking for some clarifications, as you would do in a standard audit. Horner added: "The (comments from other teams) are hugely defamatory, and we take umbrage to them. I have no idea what the outcome of our rivals' submissions are, or their accounting treatment or so on, so I would be intrigued to know where their source of information for these fictitious claims have come from." Red Bull threatens action after F1 rivals' budget cap remarks - The ... (The Race)

Christian Horner has demanded Mercedes and Ferrari withdraw comments made amid speculation Red Bull may have breached the F1 cost cap in 2021.

“So how on Earth can any team know the details of our submission? How on Earth can any team know that a team is in breach and we don’t even know if we’ve breached? “They were very clear in naming Red Bull,” Horner said. So, I would be intrigued to know where their source of information for these fictitious claims have come from. “The facts are such that the submission is made to the FIA, and it is a private submission between the team and the FIA. “The submission between the team and the FIA is one that is confidential.

RED BULL are rumoured to have breached last year's financial regulations and could reportedly be punished by the FIA over the coming days.

Mercedes have led recent calls for Red Bull to be disciplined for going over the budget cap, while Ferrari have also raised questions about their possible financial outlay in 2021. The regulations state that a 'financial penalty and/or any minor sporting penalties' may be awarded if a team is found to have exceeded the budget cap by up to five per cent of its value. Some insiders are said to be adamant that Red Bull overspent by around £10m in 2021, according to
