The Stadio Giuseppe Meazza forms the backdrop as Inter and Roma go head-to-head in Saturday's blockbuster Serie A showdown.
A 3-1 defeat against Udinese in their last outing marked just the fourth time since 1994/95 that Inter had lost at least three of their opening seven matches of a top-flight campaign (W4, L3). But it may not be the Argentine to tip the scales in the visiting side’s favor here. Without Mourinho in the dugout, Roma look like a doomed outfit before the kick-off. The visitors’ bid to claim their first top-four Serie A finish since 2017/18 is, therefore, alive and kicking. On the other hand, Roma wasted numerous clear-cut opportunities during a disappointing 1-0 home loss to Atalanta last time out. [#InterRoma] [#ForzaInter] [pic.twitter.com/VqbhD26ShA] [October 1, 2022] It will be fascinating to see how Mourinho approaches substitutions in this one - will Andrea Belotti see significant sub minutes? With Inter missing several key players like Romelu Lukaku, this match could be a golden opportunity for José Mourinho’s men to inch closer to first-place Napoli - though any success today will require excellent performances from some players who have been out of form in recent weeks, including Nicolò Zaniolo and Lorenzo Pellegrini.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi and his Roma counterpart Jose Mourinho have decided to field the following 22 players in tonight's Serie A Matchday 8 clash at.
Coach: Foti (José Mourinho suspended). Suspended: Marcelo Brozovic (1 match). Inter (3-5-2): Samir Handanovic; Milan Skriniar, Francesco Acerbi, Alessandro Bastoni; Denzel Dumfries, Nicolo Barella, Kristjan Asllani, Hakan Calhanoglu,Federico Dimarco; Edin Dzeko, Lautaro Martinez.
EARLY SCARE FOR ROMA. Spinazzola had to be quick to deny Edin Dzeko after Inter win the ball back high up the pitch. 1st Half.
Pellegrini's ball in was magnificent, but any of three Roma players could have got the decisive touch as Inter's defence disappeared. 90'
Dybala and Smalling were in top form as Roma upset Inter 2-1. Both players netted crucial goals for their side, which is now fourth in the Serie A.
He sent in a perfect cross to the back-post in the first half, assisting Dybala for the equalizer. He made an error or two, but, overall, it was a solid day at the office for the 34-year-old. It was a disappointing day for the Argentine, who struggled to find the ball in the attacking third. Late in the match, he out-jumped Skriniar on a free kick, heading home the game-winning goal. After replacing Dybala in the second half, Abraham’s finishing was rather lackluster. Overall, it was a solid performance for Spinazzola, who continues to produce in key matches. He won a few aerial challenges and took care of the ball when in possession. After the goal was called back, he disappeared from the match, failing to manage a shot in 90 minutes. Earning his first start for his new club, the deep-lying playmaker struggled to leave a mark on proceedings. After a slow start to the match, Dimarco made an incisive run into the box, where he received the ball from Nicolo Barella. Barella was at his best, creating chances on the offensive end and closing down Roma’s midfield when out of possession. In his second consecutive start, Acerbi was rather solid as the centre-most defender.
Roma extended their distance ahead of Inter Milan with a 2-1 win over their Serie A rivals, sealed with Chris Smalling's goal 15 minutes from time.
A header by AS Roma defender Chris Smalling in the second half helped his side to seal a 2-1 victory at Inter Milan in Serie A on Saturday. The Giallorossi rise to the occasion and take all three points at the San Siro!
When the drama subsided, and Camara was back on the pitch, there was just a couple of minutes to go—ultimately punctuated by a Smalling headed goal-line clearance that ensured Roma were going to snap their winless run against Inter. And if the Giallorossi were to concede in the opening minutes of the game as they've so often done in the biggest of matches? And in true La Joya style, Dybala hit Spinazzola's cross first time and found the back of the net after the shot ricocheted off Handanovic. The sides went into the break level at 1-1, and you had the sense that whichever side scored next would likely be the victor. With the Giallorossi navigating the opening 10 minutes of the match with little issue compared to their previous fixtures against Inter, you began to hope that this would be the occasion where Roma struck first blood. Not a bad way to come out of the international break, huh?
Chris Smalling headed home a late winner at San Siro as Jose Mourinho's Roma came from behind to beat Inter Milan and climb to 4th in the Serie A table.
He was anonymous thereafter and was not involved in anything of note at all, failing to register a single shot throughout the game. He had the difficult task of replacing Marcelo Brozovic in front of the defence, and he looked solid. He was well-marshalled by Smalling & co., who offered him no space to have a real sniff at Roma’s goal. While he added a little experience to the back line, the defensive organisation needed to be better on both goals. He was at his finest, creating opportunities and shutting down Roma’s midfielders off the ball. The Italian international cranked on the flair and demonstrated why he is so highly regarded. He made 3 clearances, and 2 tackles, completed 4 of his 6 attempted long balls and had a passing rate of 94%, but all of his hard work was undone by that one moment. Bastoni produced a decent display on the left side of defence, making 2 tackles, 3 interceptions, and one vital block. Skriniar was actually playing well until Smalling totally bullied him in the air, and out-jumped the Slovenian centre-back to score the game-winning goal from a free-kick. He was very deep with his positioning and needs to do better with his technique. Inter now have only two wins in six Serie A games, with the pressure mounting on Inter boss Simone Inzaghi. However, Roma responded with an equalizer within 10 minutes of the opener.
