On 44, Davis played a pass from deep on the left to Chaplin in the centre circle where the forward took it down superbly before playing an equally impressive ball into the path of Burns on the right. The Welshman took it on to the edge of the area before hitting a shot which Griffiths batted away. Luke Woolfenden allowed Scarlett to get behind him as the ball was played into the right of the box and Walton upended the on-loan Tottenham forward. It looked to be going wide before hitting a couple of defenders and going behind. Referee Charles Breakspear pointed straight to the spot and yellow-carded the Town keeper. From the corner, Edmundson headed over.

Conor Chaplin hit the post with a snapshot following a corner and Leif Davis' shot was defected over the bar before the Tractor Boys took the lead through Harness in the 25th minute when he was put through on goal by Chaplin.

Ipswich 3 Pompey 2 (Portsmouth FC)

A brace of Colby Bishop penalties was not enough to prevent Pompey from falling to their first League One defeat of the season at Ipswich.

It was the start of a crazy period that saw Pompey level with another spot-kick, only for Ipswich to quickly retake the lead. Reeco Hackett and Michael Jacobs were both brought on for the closing stages, as Pompey tried to fight back for a third time. Davis sent a low ball into the box from the left and Ladapo fired it into the top corner just a few seconds after entering the pitch. It was the visitors who made the brighter start when the action resumed and a 30-yard Marlon Pack free-kick was beaten away by Walton. And hearts were in mouths at the other end, as a shot from Harness struck Connor Ogilvie and looped onto the roof of the net. A brace of Colby Bishop penalties was not enough to prevent Pompey from falling to their first League One defeat of the season at Ipswich.

'Small margins' - Danny Cowley makes honest defeat admission ... (HampshireLive)

Portsmouth suffered their first League One defeat of the 2022/23 season on Saturday against Ipswich Town after Colby Bishop's two penalties were not enough ...

"In terms of the performance, there are always areas for us to improve. "I thought we showed resilience and determination. "Then the third goal goes in and sometimes in football you have small margins, sometimes the break of the ball, and it wasn’t quite with us against Ipswich." "It felt like we are in a good place in the game, respectful of the fact we were against a top team. "We then found our goal and tweaked a couple of bits and found a better rhythm in the second half without being free-flowing. "We go behind and suffer for the first half in a period and stayed in the game, we stayed together and showed that resilience I talked about.
