Sunderland lacked a cutting edge as a stubborn Preston side take a point back across the Pennines.

Had one mishit effort just evade Bennette at the far post. Amad Diallo: 6/10 Involved in some nice interplay between himself, Roberts and Pritchard.

Worked away up there and had a shot saved well in the second half, while also sending a header wide. His touch and passing was improved and he made a couple of dangerous runs in behind during the first half. Created the chance for Evans in the second half and won big headers in both boxes. Went the closest to scoring with his early volley and played some incisive passes in the first half. Tracked back brilliantly in the second half to stop Embleton. Pretty solid display in the middle of the park and made fouls when he needed to. A couple of shaky moments but had the athleticism to recover. In the second half, he kept out a low effort from Roberts. Smothered a dangerous Clarke cross early on and denied Embleton before the break. Tony Mowbray's side kept trying to find a way through North End's yellow wall but a low, fizzed effort from Roberts was the closest they came in the second half. Freddie Woodman had to be alert late on to palm a powerful Elliot Embleton drive away from danger, as the two sides went in at the break with it goalless. Alvaro Fernandez carried a threat with his energy and drive down the left, but the home side were the ones creating more clear-cut openings in the first half.

The number four is one-v-one with Fernandez but the PNE man watches him all the way and tackles well. The corner is dealt with and Riis draws a foul. From the follow-up corner, Lindsay wins his header again but then fouls Clarke and is booked. Tony Mowbray's side kept trying to find a way through North End's yellow wall but a low, fizzed effort from Roberts was the closest they came in the second half. Bennette picks his pocket but Storey gets back in and is fouled. There was a huge difference in the physicality of the two teams. I have said to the group that it cannot manifest and we have to keep believing in what we're doing. I am not frustrated in terms of the performance. After surviving that early scare, PNE must've thought they'd hit the front through Ben Whiteman, but Alese was back at the other end to clear his controlled volley off the line. Sunderland continued to threaten out wide with the lively Jack Clarke and Patrick Roberts, but the biggest chance of the second half fell to North End.

Sunderland 0 Preston 0 (The Northern Echo)

FREDDIE WOODMAN has played more games for Preston North End this season than he managed in more than a decade at Newcastle United.

“I had a few of my mates from up the road in Newcastle messaging me with nice words of encouragement. “In football things happen and you move on and get on with it. Woodman said: “Sunderland fans probably don’t like me and I don’t like Sunderland much! I was buzzing to sign for Preston and I am still buzzing now. And he rather enjoyed his first visit to the Stadium of Light. Mowbray threw on Amad Diallo and Jewison Bennette, who tested Woodman with a couple of efforts.
