LIVE: 'Chaos' — Mercedes star dealt huge blow as Singapore GP delayed due to wild weather.

The Dutchman was fuming on team radio and will have to pull out something special to challenge Charles Leclerc, who will start from pole position. Max Verstappen, meanwhile, was fuming after he was forced to abandon his final flying lap in qualifying and return to the pits because his Red Bull was low on fuel. “Therefore car number 63 should now be required to start the race from the pit lane.” Britain’s Russell has finished in the top five for all but one of the races he has completed in his debut season for Mercedes.

- Nicholas Latifi – DNF - Fernando Alonso – DNF - Esteban Ocon – DNF The Spaniard did secure third place ahead of Lando Norris, though, while an error from Hamilton halfway through the race saw him tumble down the order to a final finishing position of ninth. The tyres were then flat-spotted to the extent that the Dutchman was forced to pit for fresh rubber and had no chance of recovering into a lofty position, ultimately finishing in seventh. For the final thirty minutes of the race with DRS activated and dry tyres on the pair were engaged in a tense tussle for the win in treacherous conditions, but Perez handled the pressure immaculately to secure just his second triumph of the 2022 season.

F1 results: Singapore GP and World Championship standings (AS English)

Charles Leclerc finally inched closer to Max Verstappen in the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship after a second-place finish in the Singapore Grand Prix.

Verstappen had the opportunity to secure his second consecutive world title in the Singapore Grand Prix, but a dismal performance in qualifying and an unimpressive race put the championship out of his reach, at least for the weekend. Charles Leclerc was not able to find a way to get past Sergio Pérez, and the Mexican went on to win the Formula 1 Singapore GP. Alpine did not have the same luck, with both pilots Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso failing to finish due to problems with their cars’ power units.
