Rise and fall of Chris Wilder at Middlesbrough - a timeline that ... (Teesside Live)

Just two months after Kieran Scott joined as head of football, Chris Wilder is appointed by Boro boss the day after Neil Warnock is sacked.

After the Bournemouth game, Wilder's Boro managed just four wins in 17 games at a win rate of just 23.5%. Boro preferred the right fork in the road - a direction that might take a little longer depending on traffic but was far safer in terms of protecting the vehicle's long-term health. Ten months into his time at the club, he was gone and it followed a week of intense speculation linking him with the role at Bournemouth. Just two days after Boro lost at Coventry City, a club statement confirmed the club had terminated Wilder's contract 18 months early. After a poor start to the season results-wise, Boro suffered another late defeat at Watford just two days before the transfer window closed. They ultimately failed to get anyone else in and had to turn to the free-agent market to sign Massimo Luongo. Despite the setbacks, Boro went into the final weekend of the season still with a realistic chance of making the play-offs. Two subsequent chances to do so before and after Huddersfield were not taken before finally, after a week of intense speculation, Wilder finally killed it. It all seemed to change on Good Friday on the morning of Boro's trip to Bournemouth. But they were still picking up enough points to stay in the race for the top six, with performances largely still encouraging. Just two months after Kieran Scott joined as head of football, Chris Wilder is appointed by Boro boss the day after Neil Warnock is sacked. Among many good days to that point, the 2-0 win at the Riverside over in-form Forest at the Riverside stood out.

Chris Wilder sacked by Middlesbrough: Rob Edwards early favourite ... (SportsByte)

Recently-departed Watford head coach, Rob Edwards, is the early favourite to succeed Chris Wilder as Middlesbrough manager according to bookmakers.

He is rightfully remembered in true acclaim by Terriers supporters for achieving the unexpected, and the manner they gained promotion might not be matched for a long time. He is no stranger to the club, as he worked for many managers in two spells as coach, including Aitor Karanka’s Premier League ensemble, Woodgate’s inexperienced management and Neil Warnock’s experienced challenge. Although it took time to get up and running, fans needed to trust the process when it came to the managerial rookie – who had never managed a club before taking on the Terriers role. His work with Huddersfield cannot go undercredited, for taking a team who were staring League 1 directly in the face, to the play-off final in only two seasons. But if he has proven himself a Championship-capable head coach, taking on the Boro job might be a blessing to show those he can fight it out in the second tier. The Teessiders have tried for many types of managers: the young (Jonathan Woodgate), the experienced (Neil Warnock), the successful (Wilder, before arriving had never left a team in a worse position than he inherited).
