I hope, given the time, and if not I fully understand that I haven't been able to arrest the slide which has gone on, unfortunately, for a good two-and-a-half years maybe." When you win one out of your first 12, then you have to accept what's coming your way. "I'm never going to give up, not when it's tough. "That's for other people," Bruce replied, when asked about whether he expected to be in charge of the club still this weekend. "The club is a big club, and it should be fighting for promotion from this league, but you need to invest and you need to show that intent. "That's very difficult as a manager, and when you look at that, I think he deserves more time. Preston 1-0 West Brom - Report (expressandstar.com)

Albion slipped into the Championship relegation zone with a record of just one win in the opening 12 game following defeat at Preston.

Before the hour Bruce turned to Rogic and Livermore for his midfield. But the striker, while holding off a defender, could not beat Woodman with his low effort. The first half - and Albion's performance in general - drifted into a lull. The minutes ticked away agonizingly slowly for the 718 travellers in the away end - who braved the weather and traffic - and there was a sad acceptance Albion were leaving empty-handed. The Baggies livened up as Preston dropped off and Grant was played in by Livermore for his side's best opening of the evening. He made six alterations in total to the side that went down so damagingly at home to Swansea, the headline inclusions were in goal and at the heart of defence.

Manager Nathan Jones provided a squad update ahead of Saturday's trip to West Bromwich Albion, with the hope of winning a fourth consecutive away match.

He’s so important to us, it’s really unfortunate, because he’s been in fine form and he’s the type of important player we want. It was a decision we took, Henri wasn’t his energetic self so we felt we needed to do something.” With three wins back-to-back against Swansea City, Cardiff City and Hull City, the ambition is to continue that rich vein of form.

To some, West Brom are in an unrecoverable situation with Bruce at the helm – he has been in charge since February and things have gotten no better, and with the squad they have they should absolutely not be in the bottom three of the league. The Hawthorns could be a very toxic place on Saturday afternoon, and a defeat against Luton would surely put Bruce out of a job once and for all. The club have announced that Bruce will take up his pre-match responsibilities of talking to the media on Friday morning before Nathan Jones’ side visit The Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon, meaning that he will once again take to the dugout for another match as manager.

Steve Bruce's long goodbye at West Brom is another sign the world's ... (iNews)

More than half of clubs in the Championship have had a new manager since June – and there have nearly been as many changes as in the whole of last season.

Most clubs are not proactively choosing any path; they are reacting to the cries of crisis from supporters who have been hardwired towards impatience by the precedent set by the decision-makers. [Bournemouth](https://inews.co.uk/sport/football/scott-parker-sacked-9-0-defeat-liverpool-brinkmanship-bournemouth-1822922?ico=in-line_link), Fulham and Nottingham Forest – had managers in their first seasons and Steve Cooper proved that with some quickly accrued goodwill you can sprint up the league. There are an awful lot of mid-table clubs this season (Swansea in sixth and Blackpool in 21st) are separated by six points. Their squad, and therefore their job, can change over the course of a summer. Self-regulation has failed because of the growing gap between rich and rest. So they repeatedly hire and fire to seek a winning combination of manager and squad. With practical normality returning, that is no longer the case and owners are keen to make up for wasted trust. Stoke City signed 10 new players this summer (six on loan, three free transfers), allowed 13 to leave and then sacked Michael O’Neill in August. You may well rush the appointment to limit the collateral damage. According to the last full year of accounts, Championship clubs spend £125 on salaries alone for every £100 they make in revenue. Every month they deliberately walk closer to financial abyss, fuelled by a desperation for promotion that will answer their economic prayers. When Cardiff select Steve Morison’s replacement, 13 of the 24 clubs will have appointed their manager since the beginning of June.
