Google's Pixel Watch Hands-On: Here's What You Need to Know (DC Rainmaker)

The device takes pretty much everything you'd expect from a high-end Fitbit (like the Fitbit Sense/Sense 2) and blends it with the specs of a mainstream Wear OS ...

Lastly, we’ve got the Fitbit integration – which is the first Wear OS device with Fitbit built in (Google has hinted this will come to other non-Google Fitbit devices). The upper right button accesses your recent apps list, but you can also long hold it to access Google Assistant (and then use the mic/speaker to have a discussion about whatever it is you need Google to help you with). Google reiterated this claim numerous times, as well as the 1-second recording rate 24×7, both in pre-event briefings and the keynote itself, as well as numerous discussions with Fitbit employees at the event. Like many companies, both big and small, when you launch your first product you’re aiming to find the product with the widest possible appeal to cement your position in the market. But again, the general way you can look at things is that if it’s on a Wear OS 3 watch, it’s here, and if it’s on the Fitbit Sense 2, it’s here. That basically ended last year when Samsung launched the first Wear OS 3 watch (the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series), and continues here with both Samsung and Google’s offerings. And they are correct, Apple doesn’t permit any 3rd party hardware to reply to text messages/iMessage (whereas the Apple Watch can). The Pixel Watch is a Wear OS device (as expected) that also runs a tightly integrated Fitbit experience, logical, given [Google’s purchase of Fitbit a few years back](https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/11/google-acquires-fitbit-what-it-actually-means-to-wearables-and-the-industry.html). As one might expect, it’s kinda hard to encapsulate the entirety of a wearable platform (be it Apple/Google/Garmin/etc…) into a handful of bullet points, especially given there’s likely thousands of features to cover. Google says they aimed to build the watch that has the widest appeal, and we see that in aspects like size and usability. And when they have a child, then the offspring simply takes the form of the combined parents. The device takes pretty much everything you’d expect from a high-end Fitbit (like the Fitbit Sense/Sense 2) and blends it with the specs of a mainstream Wear OS watch.

The Pixel Watch should last for 24 hours on a single charge and runs on an Exynos 9110 processor along with a coprocessor, says Google. Similar to the Apple Watch, the Pixel Watch will support fall detection and also has built-in GPS for tracking running routes. From a health tracking perspective, you could almost think of the Pixel Watch as a really nice-looking Fitbit smartwatch. Plus, Google sees that as a differentiating factor between the Fitbit Sense 2 and Pixel Watch. Google is positioning the Pixel Watch as more of a full-featured smartwatch, so it includes some extras like smart home controls, access to the Google Play Store from your wrist and optional LTE connectivity (although the cellular version of the watch will cost slightly higher at $400). Similar to the Sense 2, the Pixel Watch has tiles for showing activity data, heart rate, the weather, exercise shortcuts and other bits of information. Pixel Watch vs. Galaxy Watch vs. Apple Watch: Which Wearable Wins? (PCMag.com)

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 and Apple Watch Series 8 now face a third major competitor in the form of Google's Pixel Watch. How do the three stack up?

Meanwhile, the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro and Apple Watch Ultra are available in just a single (larger) size. The Apple Watch SE is by far the cheapest smartwatch of the bunch at $249 and $299, respectively, for the Wi-Fi and cellular models. The Galaxy Watch 5 slots in after that at $279.99 or $329.99, respectively, for the Wi-Fi and cellular editions. The Pixel Watch has a blood oxygen sensor and ECG, but no thermometer. The latest Apple Watch models (the SE, [Series 8](https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/apple-watch-series-8), and [Ultra](https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/apple-watch-ultra)) stand in one corner, while Samsung's [Galaxy Watch 5](https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/samsung-galaxy-watch-5) and Watch 5 Pro lurk in another. The most obvious difference here is that Apple Watch screens are square with rounded corners, whereas the Galaxy Watch and Pixel Watch panels are circular. They also have GPS, though the Apple Watch Ultra has both L1 and L5 GPS for better accuracy. The other Apple Watch models have blood oxygen sensors, ECG functionality, and temperature tracking. We haven't yet reviewed the Pixel Watch and Watch SE (2022), though our above experience indicates you should take company estimates with a grain of salt. From there, you can narrow it down to one of the three [Apple Watches](https://www.pcmag.com/picks/the-best-apple-watch) currently available, but neither the Galaxy Watch 5 nor Pixel Watch is going to work. The Pixel Watch is simple and circular, with a stainless steel case in matte black, gold, or silver. The Apple Watch Ultra is chunkier but similar in its basic design.
