'Terrifier 2' will earn around $1.25 million over its Thurs-Sun theatrical engagement while bumping 'Top Gun: Maverick' out of the top ten.

However, I’m clearly in the critical minority (33% and 5.1/10 on Rotten Tomatoes). That’ll do, Art (the Clown). Its failure (however inevitable) won’t help in making formally-Fox anything more than a content mill for Hulu (save for a few franchises like Planet of the Apes, Avatar and Deadpool). Moreover, this is 2022, and audiences no longer go to the movies to go to the movies. It should make around $1.25 million over a six-day debut (generally playing just in one or two evening shows per theater) and gets a place in box office trivia as the film that knocked Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick out of the top ten. Movie stars no longer propel audiences into theaters unless they are adding value to a franchise and/or playing a marquee character implicitly tied to their onscreen (Tom Holland in Uncharted = Peter Parker with guns) or offscreen (Joquin Phoenix in Joker) persona. That the film stars Javier Bardem and Constance Wu ( That said, it is the only specifically-for-kids flick in theaters between now and Walt Disney’s Alas, this seems to be a scenario where just because audiences wanted to see Peter Rabbit (a $25 million debut in early 2018) does not mean they were excited about another ‘animated animal interacts with live-action humans’ fantasy. Will Speck and Josh Gordon’s live-action musical (with an animated protagonist) earned just $3.525 million on Friday for what likely will be an over/under $11 million weekend.

Box Office: 'Smile' Outpacing 'Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile' for No. 1 as ... (Variety)

Shawn Mendes' "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" opens against the second weekend of horror film "Smile," while David O. Russell's "Amsterdam" bombs.

After a triumphant debut at the Venice Film Festival, the wave of critical adoration for “Tár” has only grown in the past month. After an impressive $19 million debut, “Darling” hasn’t had the strongest staying power. The horror film will contend against Universal’s slasher finale “Halloween Ends” next weekend, but this strong second showing indicates that “Smile” should have some spooky staying power through October. A lightly positive “B” grade on CinemaScore likely won’t move the needle much. To compare to another recent film about a misunderstood but affectionate animal, that’s a chunk lower than the $16.6 million opening for Paramount’s “Clifford the Big Red Dog” last November — and that simultaneously premiered on Paramount+. “Smile” should expand its domestic haul to $49 million through Sunday. Either figure should be enough for the film to repeat as No. Meanwhile, the weekend’s other new wide release “Amsterdam,” from director David O. “Lyle, Lyle” landed a $3.47 million opening day, screening in 4,350 locations. Based on the beloved children’s book by Bernard Waber, “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile” follows a friendly CGI reptile with a bad case of stage fright, voiced by Grammy-nominated artist Shawn Mendes. There isn’t much competition for family audiences through October, barring the PG-13 DC Comics spectacle “Black Adam.” In a theatrical landscape that is still regathering itself coming out of COVID-19 lockdowns, box office expectations for adult-skewing dramas have been more forgiving.

'Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile' will melt even the most coldblooded heart (The Guam Daily Post)

The title character of "Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile" may be a coldblooded reptile - in this case, one who sings - but never you worry: This family flick delivers ...

And they nod to the source material by having Wu's character sketch Lyle in Waber's illustration style. While the movie builds toward a climax that's entirely predictable, as Hector reappears with dreams of turning Lyle into a star, its laudable call for compassion should still get through to the little ones. Sporting a thick mustache and a thinning mop of hair, the endearingly eccentric character looks after Lyle in the attic of a Manhattan brownstone - that is, until the showman skips town and leaves the family that moves in to discover a reptilian housemate with a love of caviar and bubble baths. Yet there's still room for meta-humor: As Josh tries to reassure his stepmom that Lyle isn't violent, he blurts out, "He's not like that - he wears a scarf." Lyle's companionship is a balm for tween Josh (Winslow Fegley), an anxious kid struggling to fit in at his new school, as the two outcasts bond over dumpster dives and rooftop dinners in the theater district. Among them: the soaring anthem "Top of the World," the power ballad "Carried Away" and the charming duet "Take a Look at Us Now."
