I have just retired from teaching Spanish people our wonderful language, and one of the TV shows I used to show them was Tales of the Unexpected. I watched much Tales of the Unexpected in my formative years but the two that I always recall are the ‘leg of lamb’ episode and the other being the elderly landlady who runs a B&B and embalms her guests after drugging them with a dodgy cup of tea! Details and tickets [are available here](https://membership.theguardian.com/event/football-weekly-live-world-cup-preview-425694793587). Please tell the historically curious to go “[Iker] Casillas and [Carles] Puyol joking and making fun out of coming out in football is disappointing. Having announced that he might retire due to the emotional strain of the abuse he shipped while in charge of Newcastle, Bruce decided to saddle up and ride again when West Brom came calling, and has been the target of no end of opprobrium from Baggies fans who realised this particular jig was up long before their club’s owners did. Whether or not he’ll be travelling to root for England remains to be seen, although after leaving three consecutive jobs on a tidal wave of fan ill-feeling, a few weeks of relative anonymity in a country far away and full of other blokes named Bruce could be just the tonic. “West Bromwich Albion have today parted company with manager Steve Bruce,” droned a statement from the Hawthorns on Monday morning.

He had taken over on February 3 from Valerian Ismael as the club's fanbase were left frustrated with their style of football. Albion's only victory this season came back in August - a 5-2 success over Hull City and it was a win that brought fresh optimism around the Hawthorns.

West Brom have sacked Steve Bruce after a dismal start to the season has left them in the Championship relegation zone.

In a statement, the club said: "West Bromwich Albion have today parted company with Manager Steve Bruce. Steve Bruce was Manchester United's Sergio Ramos, got punched by Arsenal hero Ian Wright, was a legendary leader for Sir Alex Ferguson, and wrote murder mystery ...

“I then ran off and it all kicked off in the tunnel. “The problem I had was Tony Adams and Bouldy were already too close to the end so I had no back-up. He phoned me on the Sunday morning and said ‘you’re bang out of order you’ve got to phone him’. I said sorry to him and told him my stepdad told me ‘if you’re smaller you’ve got to get the first punch in’.” The enormity of it – from back pages to front pages – and the increased demand on you was instant. “At Old Trafford the tunnel is down that end, me and Brucie are having a little tete-a-tete and then he’s gone ‘right that’s it you, I’ll see you in the tunnel’. He always got me booked so I had to try and be a little bit calmer. I tried to run down the tunnel really quickly but Brucie was waiting for me, fist clenched, standing there. “That is the big thing that a lot of players have to come to terms with quickly, as it can quite easily swallow you up. Fortunately for myself, I thought, ‘I’ve worked 10 years to get here, I’m going to give it my best shot and I wouldn’t be daunted or put off by it because it’s been a long road to get here’. “It was the enormity of playing for Manchester United. He won more headers at 6ft than the average centre back at 6ft 4in, and it wasn’t always easy – you could tell the cost by looking at his nose.”

Comment: Not even his 1000 games could prepare Steve Bruce for ... (expressandstar.com)

The pressure on Steve Bruce had become unbearable and the only decision was for the manager to be relieved of his duties.

Albion had to act, because the play-offs are the very least of their ambitions – for chief executive Ron Gourlay this is a defining appointment. Albion – and it understood Bruce, too – were reeling from a chaotic and embarrassing transfer deadline day, where the manager was let down on two all-but sewn up loan arrivals of Josh Onomah and Steven Alzate. But the Baggies couldn’t get things right at the other end of the pitch. Liam Delap and Keinan Davis were lined up as key short-term replacements for Dike, but Albion could not get them over the line. One win in 13 league games, 11 points and 22nd in the Championship is untenable. But in some instances he seemed deflated to the point of defeated.

Where is Steve Bruce going to show up for his next pay-off? (The Mag)

When it comes to making money, sometimes it's the less than straightforward methods that work out the most profitable. · I Paid 425 quid for a bike worth about ...

In recent years the term “by mutual consent” appears to have lost it’s meaning. They pay decent Championship wages so after a year chilling, are invariably back up for another year with the big boys, collecting the big bucks. There’s no need to spend hundreds of millions to get to the “next level” when you can just bob up and down between the Prem and the Championship. The amazing thing about his story is that the clubs that he went to then appeared genuinely surprised when he pulled the same stunts on them. Not too long ago it suggested that both parties had come to some kind of agreement after discussion. Going on strike more times than the Rail Union, the French international had a reputation for being difficult and downed tools just about everywhere he went to engineer moves to other clubs and the pay rises that came with them. I suppose with a matches-per-season average only slightly better than that of Colback, his critics might have a valid case. The Canaries, footballing yo-yos, do a year in the top flight collecting the TV money, then drop down to the second tier for a year where they still do quite well financially, AND collect their parachute payment. You may find this difficult to believe but I have heard some refer to Michael Owen as a bit of a tea-leaf when it came to his time on Tyneside. The insurance company insisted they would only give me 715 quid for it. I Paid 425 quid for a bike worth about 800. Sitting in the van, about to pull away, he asked “was this the one with the pale blue seat that was nicked off the hill a couple of months ago?”
