The coronation in Westminster Abbey will be on a Saturday, Buckingham Palace reveals.

King Charles will be 74 at the coronation - the oldest that a new monarch has been crowned. "King Charles has a very difficult balancing act. In 1953 temporary stands were built inside the Abbey which allowed 8,000 guests. Camilla, the Queen Consort will be crowned as part of the service, in a similar but simpler ceremony to the crowning of the King. Camilla, the Queen Consort, will be alongside the King and will also be crowned in the historic ceremony. With much pageantry and ritual, the King will be anointed as sovereign and a crown placed on his head.

For the last 900 years the ceremony has taken place at Westminster Abbey, and has almost always been conducted by the archbishop of Canterbury since 1066. Palace insiders told the Mail on Sunday that the Duke of Norfolk, who as earl marshal has responsibility for organising the ceremony, had been tasked with making it a simpler, shorter and more diverse ceremony that reflects modern Britain. The 1762 gold state coach, which was refurbished at great expense for the Queen’s platinum jubilee, will be part of the coronation procession once again. The government has yet to comment on whether there will be any arrangements for a bank holiday. But the palace statement does hint at modifications to a ceremony that has retained a similar structure for more than 1,000 years. There was no comment from the palace on reports that Charles wants a pared-back ceremony of just one hour.

King Charles III will be crowned at Westminster Abbey on 6 May next year. It will see the King dressed in special robes and presented with the orb, coronation ring, sceptre and rod. This is followed by the enthroning, which will see the monarch lifted onto a different throne by archbishops, bishops and "other peers of the kingdom". The third part - the anointing - follows, which is the process of blessing and consecrating the new monarch with holy oil - the central act of the religious ceremony. Second is the coronation oath, which will see the King promise to reign according to law, exercise justice with mercy and maintain the Church of England. He will then be presented with the Sword of State and declare at the altar: "The things which I have here before promised, I will perform, and keep. After the ceremony, the King and Queen Consort are likely to appear on the balcony at Buckingham Palace, as the Queen and Prince Philip did in 1953. The recognition sees the monarch stand in the theatre - the central part of the Abbey - and turn to the north, south, east and west to 'show himself unto the people'. The ceremony will be broadcast live on television, but the number of guests who attend in person is expected to be cut from 8,000 to 2,000. Timings for the latest coronation have not been revealed, but it is likely to be in the morning as well.
