Rangers attempted to find a way back into the contest, with Jimmy Dunne taking aim from the edge of the box but he could not keep his shot down. First, Bree's low ball was met by Morris, his shot well cleared by a covering Rangers defender, before Bree picked out Adebayo, who was desperately unfortunate to see his towering header strike the inside of the post and bounce out. Luton then took the lead on 19 minutes when Elijah Adebayo's cross was just over the head of Allan Campbell, Carlton Morris picking up the loose ball and finding the stooping Adebayo to head over the line from a yard out.

Luton v QPR line-ups: Balogun at right-back, Dickie a sub (West London Sport)

Leon Balogun will play at right-back for QPR at Kenilworth Road, where Luke Amos starts and Rob Dickie is dropped to the bench.

But Rangers were quickly undone again at the other end, with Harry Cornick getting in on the right and teeing up Freeman for a tap in. The ball ended up in the net after ricocheting off Dunne, who collided with Dieng and was subsequently helped from the field. But Balogun was hurt as he landed awkwardly in the opening stages and he had to be replaced by Osman Kakay after 14 minutes.

Luton v QPR player ratings (West London Sport)

QPR suffered their first defeat by Luton since 2007, going down 3-1 at Kenilworth Road. Here's how we rated the Rangers players.

Didn’t really get the chance to make an impression in his time on the field. Rangers were better when he came onto the field and went to a back three. Did have some bright moments when he got on the ball, but a day to forget for the 19-year-old. Better in the second half against a very physical and direct side. Sustained a worrying-looking injury when he collided heavily with Dieng for Luton’s killer second goal which appeared to go in off his back. Left isolated for the Hatters’ second as he had to deal with a poor back-pass from Tim Iroegbunam.

There’s going to be one or two moments like that in the style we play. “It’s disappointing but we’ve got to put it into perspective,” he said. But we played in front of them and, to be fair to Luton, they defended really well. Beale was quick to defend his young midfielder, though, saying: “I’m not going to point any fingers at Tim. “That’s how I’m asking them to play, in that style, so I’ll take that one on the chin myself. He’s a 19-year-old boy and I’m asking him to play in the hustle and bustle of the Championship.
