The star referenced his mum during his Strictly Come Dancing elimination last night, but he has previously opened up about her traumatic death.

"@bbcstrictly was out of my comfort zone but I did gain so much from the experience. Though he and pro partner, Nadiya Bychkova, did not make it all the way through, he has since said that he "gained so much from the experience". It was an incredibly big decision to come back to the UK. [...] Her stomach rupture, I knew that I wouldn't have a mother within 12 hours and sure enough it was 12 hours later she passed." Posting on Twitter after his elimination yesterday, Matt said: "Just taking the day to decompress. I came on social media not knowing what to expect and I am completely humbled, and to be honest with you, very emotional at the outpouring and kindness that I have received. It is understood that a drunk driver was responsible for her death. But he said that the way in which he lost his beloved mum left him with "PTSD" and he became reclusive. But her death came as a huge shock, because it was not the cancer that killed her. Speaking on the White Wine Question Time podcast in 2019, Matt explained that he had to drain fluid from her lungs each day, to keep her comfortable. She was a very proud woman." The former Bros singer has previously spoken out about the "traumatic" death, that followed his mum's diagnosis with breast cancer.
