My grandmother’s beliefs are that of the North. It’s worth noting that Diwali also marks the new year, as it coincides with harvest season. For the residents of the western states of India, like Gujarat, Diwali marks the end of the calendar year. Others think of it as "Choti (small) Diwali" and use it as an excuse to start the celebrations early with feasts and fireworks. Diwali celebrations begin early with a visit to a place of worship, such as a temple. Many people also decorate the entrances of their homes and businesses with colorful lanterns and traditional temporary designs, or "rangoli." The occasion is marked with prayers for the prosperity, success, and well-being of loved ones. This year, Deepavali, or the Festival of Lights, as it is also called, will be observed from October 22nd to October 26th.

The presence of Tea light candles can bring the feel of the fairytale world on any occasion. In fact, people in earlier times would use another version of it known as the urli bowl, which would be filled with dried or fresh flower petals. Diwali 2022: Of making memories and traditions (Hindustan Times)

Diwali celebrations are all about making memories and carrying forward the traditions that the elderly in the family have left behind.

And that’s what I would want my son to understand. I would like my son Anishq to follow this ritual. I want him to realise life is all about loving your family. This year, I’m going to be in Delhi for Diwali with my maternal family, and I’m very excited to share these moments with my daughter Anysha because she will also get to see the celebration. That is something that I would like them to follow in their life, not just on Diwali, but every special occasion that can think of. Togetherness and importance of family is what I would like her to learn. I have tried my best to teach my son Soham the importance of these rituals, and I hope he realises them. My daughter Devi is still very small, but I am, from this year itself, trying to make her realise that Diwali is about family and spending time together. I would love for my son Nirvair to follow this through, and realise that some are needy, and making them smile only helps in creating more happiness. We (my wife Shweta Kawatra and I) try to add more Indian touch to the celebrations as compared to what these kids are getting exposed to. Another ritual I want her to learn is doing Diwali puja. The simple idea of us painting diyas together is what I want to inculcate in her.

Diwali is nearly upon us and, with family central to the festivities, here are some ways you can celebrate with your children.

It can be fun to try it out with children - and a stencil might come in handy too. Each faith marks the festival with different historical events and stories, but they follow the theme of a symbolic victory of light over darkness. Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘dipavali’ which means ‘row of lights’. You could read the legends attached to Diwali with your children. During the festival, people wear their finest clothing, take part in ceremonies worshipping the goddess Lakshmi, and enjoy family meals. Firework displays are also commonly put on during Diwali. Celebrants prepare for it by decorating their homes with diyas (oil lamps) and rangolis (colourful, circular patterns).
