Several of Truss's own Conservative lawmakers have called on her to quit, with some saying they had submitted letters of no confidence in Truss to Brady, whose committee sets the rules for selecting and changing the party's leader. Truss is battling to retain her grip on power after a tumultous six weeks in the job that has included financial market chaos in response to her government's economic programme, and the replacement of two of her most senior ministers. LONDON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Liz Truss is meeting with Graham Brady, the head of the 1922 Committee of Conservative lawmakers, a source in Truss's Downing Street office said.

If Sir Graham told Ms Truss she had lost the confidence of her party, she would be under irresistible pressure to stand down without a vote. Meetings between the pair are also not unusual. Under the rules of the 1922 Committee, a confidence vote is triggered in the Tory leader if 15 per cent of their MPs demand one. “What we are talking about is how we strike a balance to ensure that we have control over high-skilled migrants coming into the country to ensure our The spokesman also refused to say if Ms Truss would stick to the Tory manifesto pledge to reduce net migration overall, understood to be a key disagreement with Ms Braverman ahead of her resignation. However his unscheduled arrival - echoing his visit to Boris Johnson in July, when he told the PM he had lost the confidence of the parliamentary Conservative party - has fuelled speculation that Ms Truss is also doomed.

The Green party will always stand for a fairer, greener country. Both in the parliamentary party and the rank-and-file, they should hold a vote for the single, chosen person. Well, that is the expectation. But if MPs could strong-arm all candidates to agree to accept the verdict of MPs, so that the runner-up waives their right to take it to the membership, the members could be excluded. 1) MPs choosing a leader, and members being given the chance to approve them in a snap ballot. The Tories want to impose austerity 2.0 with no electoral mandate. But Brady has indicated the party does not want this. Or, at least, the MPs could choose a new leader, and that new leader could start forming a cabinet while waiting to be confirmed in post by a members’ ballot. Under Tory party rules, members are meant to elect the leader from a shortlist of two. If [MPs choose the leader] do this, they should probably do something else which sounds pointless, and almost like life in a Communist country, but isn’t. In recent weeks there has been an assumption that MPs might bypass the Tory membership, who are meant to get the final say over the leader. The claim of illiteracy appears to refer to that trip, when Truss was British foreign secretary.
1922 Committee chairman has overseen votes of no confidence on two prime ministers.
In 2010, he was made chairman of the 1922 Committee. In May 2019, he resigned as committee chairman to consider a run for prime minister in the contest won by Mr Johnson. The short timeline suggests the grassroots Tory membership will not be given a say, with the decision left to Conservative MPs. In the event, he did not enter the race. Sir Graham was a shadow minister during the party's time out of power but he has never had a ministerial post. Mr Johnson won the confidence vote but it left him politically wounded and he was soon out of office.

Serial rebel Andrew Bridgen told the Telegraph “we cannot carry on like this” and, in a blog for American website Pavlovic Today, said Ms Truss has “run out of friends” and “sunk her own leadership” with the mini-budget. The number of Conservatives publicly calling for the Prime Minister to quit doubled to a dozen within the space of a couple of hours on Thursday morning.
