Over the weekend, the Sunday Times reported that Ms Truss was of the view that the former Chancellor and Health Secretary Sajid Javid was "shit". Asked about the suspension, Ms Truss's spokesman refused to refer to Mr Stein by name, but told reporters: "The prime minister has made it very clear that some of the briefings are completely unacceptable and must stop." He previously worked for Ms Truss when she was chief secretary to the Treasury before he became a special advisor to Amber Rudd.

ONE of Liz Truss's most senior aides has reportedly been suspended pending an ethics investigation into briefings against senior Tory MPs.

Mr Stein worked for Ms Truss when she was chief secretary to the Treasury, then served as a special adviser to Amber Rudd when she was Work and Pensions Secretary. ITV’s Robert Peston said Mr Javid had been “incandescent” about the remark, and had planned to raise the matter at PMQs today. The report said Ms Truss had discounted Mr Javid for the job.

The Sunday Times reported that when it was suggested that Mr Javid take over at the Treasury, a Downing Street source said: “The prime minister laughed out loud at the suggestion. A terrible man who was undermining the PM.” He was a key figure in the Truss leadership campaign and his role in Number 10 was said to be that of an "enforcer". On Wednesday there was anger in Downing Street at the way Mr Javid had sought to humiliate the Prime Minister with his demands. The aide was told just minutes before Prime Minister’s Questions that he had been suspended, and Mr Javid never asked his question in the Commons. Mr Javid was said to be angry about a briefing to the Sunday Times newspaper that Ms Truss thought he was “s—” and should not replace Kwasi Kwarteng at the Treasury.
