Lennon was appointed Omonia boss back in February after a year out of the game. The problem was that you’d think, with 10 games to go, I’d be guaranteed the rest of the season. Then I got four league games of the following season before I was gone. The volatile nature of managing in Cypriot football was known to Lennon before joining but it was cruelly underlined with a marker after Nicosia's defeat. But despite the unceremonious exit there's always been an understanding Lennon was operating under Cyprus rules where manager baggings are commonplace in a league where teams jostle for supremacy like Wacky Races. The Irishman masterminded a Cup triumph last season before wiping the floor with Gent in They were defeated by Real Sociedad and consecutive games to Manchester United by a single goal - with Scott McTominay's injury time winner rescuing the Red Devils.
Neil Lennon's sacking by Omonia Nicosia, which was announced to the amazement of almost everyone who heard it last night, is not something any Celtic fan ...
He put a brave face on it, and dressed it up as a chance to “manage abroad” but it would not have been his first choice, not even close, and having failed there you wonder where else he can go. Thus the idea that Lennon might learn some lesson about his ability to handle such a job went completely by the boards. He knows full well the chaos which reigned inside both clubs, and it was no great shock that some version of it was later to reign inside Celtic Park. Lennon was allowed to stay in situ when everyone knew the game was up. It’s one of the reasons he can never return to this club in any official capacity. But he has, at times, been a lucky manager, mostly in having caught the eye of Peter Lawwell.
Lennon was surprisingly shown the door just days after he was seconds away from holding Manchester United to a draw.
"With regards to the fans, we understand their feelings. Our goal is for the new young coach to have a personality and to know the philosophy of Omonia - to play attacking football and utilise our young talents. We have said several times that in the team there is a daily evaluation for everyone at the club. He won the cup, we entered the European group stages, we played competitive games in Europe. "But the decision was made mainly due to the team's continued competitive instability and performance. Omonia issued a brief statement about his departure following a defeat to Nea Salamis that left them seventh in the table.

UEFA's Cyprus football correspondent gives an insight into Lennon's sacking in an exclusive chat with Football Scotland.
In the eyes of the board, he has fallen short with matters on the home front. This has taken its toll on some of the bigger guns in the league like Anorthosis, APOEL and Omonoia who are all seemingly struggling to keep the pace with them. There were certainly groans in the terraces with the way things were going in the league although they certainly didn’t turn on Lennon and his players during their recent European games against Real Sociedad and Man Utd where they ran both sides very close. And let’s not forget, performances aside in Europe, Omonoia are still bottom of their Europa League group and even lost 3-0 at home to Sheriff and that is something the board and fans were not happy about. The board would have looked at where they are in the league table and probably said ‘If we don’t act now, we won’t even qualify for Europe next season.’ The club were complimenting him and saying the decision to axe him was unfortunate. Lennon obviously won the Cypriot Cup in May and led them into the Europa League group stages. I think the fact that Apollon and AEK are also in the groups but doing better than Omonoia in the league certainly didn’t do Lennon any favours. Chairmen in Cyprus almost always pull the trigger when things are not going well and have very little patience. But that is the case in Cyprus unfortunately and Lennon would have certainly known this when he first took the job. The fact that Omonoia ran Man Utd close was never going to give Lennon enough credit if the performances in the league were not satisfactory. [Celtic](https://www.footballscotland.co.uk/all-about/celtic-fc) legend lost his job just seven months into the role, where he led the club to Cypriot Cup success and into the Europa Conference League group stages.
