I think they will want to get over this little crisis and reassure the markets. Right now it is not open to the prime minister to call an election. So the best thing is to have another prime minister who would take the party to the election deadline as it were. Maybe Rishi will come back as the chancellor and that is quite possible because they are friends but I think what will happen is that Jeremy Hunt would most probably become the new prime minister. The opposition can propose it and then if the government agrees that could be changed but right now the Conservative Party does not want an election. ITV news presenter Robert Peston has joined a long line of broadcasters to have accidentally called chancellor Jeremy Hunt a rude word live on air.

Hunt has not responded to every slip of the tongue made about him - he’s a busy man and this would take up a fair amount of his time. Andrew Marr, made the same mistake the same day when introducing a discussion about Naughtie’s slip - the Hunt gaffe was fast becoming a self-sustaining mistake. It’s happened surprisingly regularly, though not for a while as Hunt has spent most of the last few years on the backbenches.

Jeremy Hunt's Budget set to be delayed by new Prime Minister (Telegraph.co.uk)

The Budget was set to be announced on Oct 31, but now the new Tory leadership contest is scheduled to come to an end on Oct 28.

The latest ONS data revealed that increased borrowing was driven by £7.7 billion of debt interest payments for the month, reflecting an increase of £2.5 billion compared with the same month in 2021. "Public sector debt as a share of GDP is now at 98%, its highest level since the early 1960s. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that a jump in debt interest grew borrowing beyond the expectations of economists, laying bare the challenge facing the Chancellor and new Prime Minister ahead of the fiscal event at the end of this month. "So I think everyone will be trying to say please, please, can we get this done quickly and what the markets will look at as well is not just if it is done quickly but is it done in a way that delivers a leader that can then lead the party and have a majority in the House of Commons." Borrowing in September outpaced the predictions of economists, who had forecast £17 billion for the month, and was significantly above the £14.8 billion estimated by the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) back in March. It is understood the new prime minister would want to review the proposals, and although Mr Hunt will be ready to proceed at the end of the month, a government source told The Times that it will "inevitably" be delayed.

Jeremy Hunt Profile (Palatinate)

British politics has set off on another tumultuous ride. Liz Truss has sacked her chancellor, Kwasi Kwateng, as a result of the so-called 'mini-budget', ...

Neither were stamp-duty removals on the first £250,000 of property’s value and the first £425,000 of the property’s value for first-time buyers. In his first address to Parliament as chancellor on Monday, Hunt ultimately sent Truss’s economic policies to the grave. To the more moderate Conservative MPs, Hunt is a safer, more prudent alternative to Kwarteng and may represent a return to the Conservatism of the ‘Cameron years.’ Hunt will lay out more detailed economic plans in a full budget on the 31st of October. Hunt is evidently experienced in politics and governance, but is he able to efficiently address the current economic crisis? The significance of this appointment is huge – many Conservative MPs now regard Hunt as now having more authority than the Prime Minister.
