The Stranger ending explained: Is Henry Teague brought to justice? (HITC)

The Stranger details an intense undercover police operation but the film's ending has prompted questions and needs to be explained.

Out of our deepest respect for the family, the name of the victim is never mentioned in the film and the film does not depict any details of the murder. It is a decision we continue to respect.” Nor is the family represented in the film in any way. “Individuals who make money on a heinous crime are parasites. They declined to be involved. That film is The Stranger which details a carefully planned undercover police operation that hopes to bring the perpetrator of a heinous crime to justice.

The Stranger Review: An Effective Psychological Crime Thriller (Screen Rant)

The Stranger proves that Wright is a capable director and writer who can create a compelling piece of art that unsettles audiences.

To many non-Australian viewers, it will be the opening note that states the film is based on a true story that will give it away. As with the countless reboots and remakes, true crime thrillers don't need to retraumatize victims and their families. There is a brutality to the film that isn’t forced by graphic violence or over-the-top and harsh actions. To Wright’s and the actors’ credit, The Stranger succeeds at having the audience enraptured by the performances and the story that unfolds around this friendship. While the filmmakers chose to leave the child's name out of the film, the young boy’s The Stranger is a fictional account of the investigation to solve the murder of a 13-year-old boy in Australia.

The Stranger movie review: The new Netflix film, starring an in-form Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris, subverts (and honours) genre conventions with style and ...

The Stranger opens with a voiceover of Mark teaching his son to meditate the darkness out of his body. For the investigating officer to have a child of the same age as the one he is fighting to get justice for borders on self-parody, but somehow, the movie manages to make you briefly forget that this is a cliche at all. Henry was suspected of killing a young boy in the year 2002 — the movie is largely set in 2010 — and has since been wandering around Australia, keeping to himself, and looking for a fresh start. Having been welcomed into the mob with a shrug and a handshake, thanks to Mark’s intervention, Henry has a reason to feel hopeful again. But The Stranger is the kind of movie title that comes across like a last-minute studio mandate, and not something that you’d ever read on a first draft. That title hardly represents the kind of slow-burn, arthouse death stare into the heart of the abyss that this film is.

A Netflix Original Thriller Critics Haven't Trashed for a Change ... (We Got This Covered)

A Netflix crime thriller that arrives bearing critical acclaim? Who'd have thought.

It might be light on CGI and explosions, but The Stranger is destined to go down as one of Netflix’s finest efforts of 2022. However, one of them is a murder suspect and the other is an undercover cop, with the duplicitous origins of their kinship threatening to plunge both of their lives into immediate and potentially devastating danger. For a film inspired by an actual undercover investigation into a kidnapping and murder case, Netflix's The Stranger is a sober, mood-heavy drama that ...

And the unusual bonding between Henry and Mark gives birth to ambiguities that one is bound to reflect on after the end credits roll. One of the most memorable scenes in the film is that of a senior police official gripped by anxiety as he is gearing up to interview a suspect. It keeps these details to a minimum, even when the characters discuss them. The other outstanding moment arrives towards the end: an extreme close-up of the suspect’s face on a blurry black-and-white surveillance monitor while he confesses to his crime. The Stranger has the texture of an apocalyptic film, with greys, browns, and blacks dominating the colour palette. It is chilling, sure, but it’s the presence of Sean Harris -- as Henry, a convict recently out of prison -- that mostly does it.
