The actor behind the Doctor's most fearsome foe on how the role changed the path of his career and what lies ahead.

"That was really the start of a job that was more than just a job. "Being the Master in this universe has really encouraged me to do that," he says, once again considering his next steps. I thought that was fascinating and something I would really love to incorporate." "I've been very fortunate that when I've come in, I've been part of big episodes, big events – me kind of cropping up all the time, I worry that people get might get a little bit sick of me! "Chris was like, 'We want you back – how many episodes do you want to be in?' and I said, 'Wow, I need to think about this.' "That's something that I've always continued, even coming back for the centenary – I didn't want people to think, 'Oh yeah, we've seen Sacha's incarnation, now we're gonna get more of the same.'" Dhawan's casting might not have happened at all, though, had he stuck to his plan of taking "a little bit of time out" from acting in 2019 – but the call to play the Master was, he says, "an offer I couldn't refuse". "Once you're in that environment, your adrenaline kicks in and you just embrace taking the handbrake off and seeing what happens – and as nerve-wracking as it is, something magical can happen. "I've been quite open about struggles with mental health, or Crohn's disease, and they're just so brilliant – I see comments on Twitter or if I'm doing a Comic Con, I get to meet fans and it's really special. [Spyfall](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/doctor-who-guide/doctor-who-spyfall/), Dhawan's take on the Master was warmly received by Doctor Who fandom.

The Power of the Doctor: Jodie Whittaker's Doctor Who finale – live (The Guardian)

Jodie Whittaker stars in Doctor Who for the final time – but how will she meet her end? Join us live to find out!

I’ve been a big fan of both Yaz as a character and Mandip Gill as an ambassador for the show. And how is it connected to the return of the wonderful Donna Noble? She said “to be on set with people that they paved the way for us to be here, is a really emotional thing.” And that’s not just because of her acting ability, it is the fact that she is one hell of a company leader. Tom Baker is still very active in the world of Doctor Who, but has been looking increasingly frail I’m afraid to say. On screen we only ever saw happy partings with the Seventh Doctor and Ace in both Survival - “Come on, Ace, we’ve got work to do!” and at the end of Dimensions in Time. After him saying “Someone tell me what the hell is going on here?” in the trailer that followed, who knows? I can’t wait to see what stories they have in store for the Fugitive Doctor.” It was nice to get a little bit more of Jo Martin in a role that she excelled at when actually given screentime. The Daleks were a bit part here, and Ashad remains the only Cyberman that can shoot straight when needed. The Master’s Tardis is a type 75. Whether it was the gif-able Boney M Rasputin dancing scene, his Doctor cosplay, or his taunting of Unit staff and companions, he positively revelled in being centre of attention and had all the best lines.

Doctor Who review – Jodie Whittaker bows out with big bangs and ... (The Guardian)

Full of spectacular action, explosions, epic battles and plenty of old faces, The Power of the Doctor is a glorious send-off for Whittaker as 13.

The Doctor Who finale is on BBC iPlayer now in the UK. The Daleks appear, and then the Master himself is back, meaning The Power of the Doctor is back-to-basics Doctor Who, but with add-ons and extras. Having dealt with time loops, Sea Devils and pirates in the first two of these three last specials, the Doctor is now facing her old foes the Cybermen. The Power of the Doctor (BBC One) approaches this mammoth task by rolling up its sleeves and throwing everything at it, then taking a step back and throwing some more. Not only is it Whittaker’s swansong, but it runs to the length of a feature film, at a whopping hour and a half, and it is part of the BBC’s centenary celebrations, too.

Sure, he’s an obsessive weirdo and loves dressing up, but now in the middle of a blithering "Master’s Dalek Plan", he has time spare to robe himself in a mishmash of former Doctors’ garb, with accoutrements such as Doctor Two’s recorder and Doctor Five’s lapel celery. Is Sacha Dhawan playing a new Doctor, or the Master inside the Doctor’s body and mind? More significantly, Chibnall reintroduces 1980s companions [Tegan and Ace](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/doctor-who-ace-tegan-return-interview/) after many decades’ absence. Halfway into the tale, [Graham (Bradley Walsh)](https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/bradley-walsh-graham-doctor-who-return-newsupdate) pops up inexplicably in a volcano, and Vinder (Jacob Anderson) crashes through a wormhole conveniently close to the seat of the action but sadly has little to contribute. I enjoyed how Steven Moffat developed the Master, and showed Missy (brilliant Michelle Gomez) seeking redemption, but under Chibnall, the Master has reverted to the ridiculous; his motivation unclear, his disguises daft. And let it be noted, The Power of the Doctor is the 300th story since Doctor Who began in 1963.

Doctor Who: The Power of the Doctor Review (Den of Geek)

Old friends and foes collide to orchestrate the Thirteenth Doctor's farewell adventure – spoilers abound in this year's final Doctor Who Review…

But then, you could argue that’s not the approach a celebration of the show’s “past, present, and future” should take, and that there was never going to be a better time for any showrunner to look back upon their work, and the work of their predecessors, and indulge in a bit of a victory lap. Volcanoes are now going off all over Earth, so the Doctor and her chums pay another visit to the Master’s cyberplanet, shifting it forward to 2022 and using the power of cyber-conversion to zap all the flowing lava with cyber…ness, transforming it into metal. Yaz braves the blasts to carry her back into the TARDIS, and the Doctor murmurs “Extended fam…” before passing out. Next, they pour all of the ensuing regeneration energy back into the Master, restoring the Doctor to her old self. Underneath Bolivia, Yaz and the Doctor realise that the Daleks are planning to set off all of Earth’s volcanoes — and, too late, also realise that the Daleks know they’re here. Underneath the volcano, Ace runs into none other than Graham and his psychic paper (a welcome return for Bradley Walsh) and unleashes a stash of Nitro-9 to deal with the Daleks. After a couple of slightly weird scenes (including the Doctor insisting that Yaz be given a gun to wave around), the Master is taken to UNIT and locked up. Petersburg and goad all of the Cybermasters into shooting one another thanks again to the holo-Doctor (now resembling Jo Martin, not that that makes a lick of sense since the Doctor doesn’t have those memories). Not just any Cyberman, but a clone of Ashad, who demonstrates all of the brutality he exhibited in “Ascension of the Cybermen” as he bats aside soldiers and smashes the Master out of his cell so that he can teleport to safety. Ashad was already inside UNIT thanks to Tegan, and the Cybermen are largely left to their own devices for the rest of the story. Here, the audience are reunited with both Dorothy “Ace” McShane and Tegan Jovanka, last seen in “Survival” and “Remembrance of the Daleks,” respectively. Thirteen is everywhere and nowhere; the “real” Doctor is literally erased halfway through by the Master’s scheme, but a holographic duplicate means that Whittaker still gets to be a meaningful presence in multiple plot-threads at once, bouncing off companions old and new.

Doctor Who: The Power of the Doctor, review: a true crowd-pleaser ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall bowed out with an electrifying thrill-ride of non-stop surprises.

The Fugitive Doctor (Jo Martin) made it six by swaggering in to help outwit the Master. To combat this triple threat, the Time Lord was reunited with classic companions Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Ace (Sophie Aldred). For her final battle, the Doctor faced a showdown with arch foe The Master (scenery-chewing Sacha Dhawan), who teamed up with the Daleks and Cybermen to destroy humanity and take over Earth. This was an air-punching lap of honour, topped off by its climactic regeneration scene. When the Master half-killed her, the Doctor was visited by five of her former selves: Colin Baker, Peter Davison, Paul McGann, Sylvester McCoy and David Bradley as William Hartnell. “Welcome to the end of your existence.” Well, this phase of it anyway.

Doctor Who Special: The Power of the Doctor review – the BBC has ... (Evening Standard)

Chris Chibnall writes Jodie Whittaker one exhilarating exit episode.

The Power of the Doctor may not have been the perfect ending, but it’s still a fitting tribute to a great Doctor. And there are genuine laugh-out-loud scenes, usually involving Sacha Dhawan as the Master (he’s very good at playing the lunatic) and episodes of real poignancy, such as when some of the Doctor’s ex-companions get together to talk about their old friend. Chibnall’s tenure brought in new and fascinating storylines that spoke to real-world political and societal issues and told stories that not only hadn’t been seen in Doctor Who but also on mainstream television in general. Some potentially enthralling plotlines, such as The Master’s face showing up on some of the world’s most famous paintings (including The Scream and Girl with a Pearl Earring) or Rasputin mesmerising people in Tsar Nicholas’ 1916 Russian palace, are never properly developed – somehow there just isn’t time, for this or for real suspense or dread to build. With a feature-length running time, it marked the departure of both [Jodie Whittaker](/showbiz/ncuti-gatwa-jodie-whittaker-doctor-who-british-david-tennant-russell-t-davies-b1033052.html) as the Doctor and writer Chris Chibnall after three series – and audiences were primed for jam-packed action and surprises. A frenetic opening, and that energy didn’t let up for the entire episode; though the pacing ultimately became this finale’s biggest downfall.

Doctor Who, BBC1, review: Jodie Whittaker deserves better than ... (iNews)

The centenary special — and Whittaker's swansong — was a busy, uneven hour and a half of wibbly-wobbly plot nonsense. Doctor Who - The Power of the Doctor ...

Here’s hoping that the return of David Tennant, along with the return of showrunner Russell T Davies and new Doctor Ncuti Gatwa, can lead the show into a brighter future. Alas, it amounted to little more than the sight of the Master wearing a mishmash of past Doctor outfits. But the most egregious of missed opportunities is the lack of romantic pay off between the Doctor and companion Yaz (Mandip Gill). As a BBC centenary special, it was steeped in nostalgia. [Jodie Whittaker](https://inews.co.uk/culture/television/doctor-who-jodie-whittaker-chris-chibnall-interview-new-series-378761?ico=in-line_link) began her era of [Doctor Who](https://inews.co.uk/news/entertainment/ncuti-gatwa-doctor-who-new-actor-casting-save-show-1617755) by making history as the first ever woman Doctor. Was there a logical reason why he was disguised as Rasputin in Nicholas II’s Russia?

Doctor Who: The Power of the Doctor Easter Egg Guide (Den of Geek)

Let's delve into the many, many nods back to Doctor Who's past in Jodie Whittaker's final episode. Spoilers!

(Conversely, in “The End of Time,” the Master decided to copy himself into the bodies of more-or-less everyone who wasn’t the Doctor…) - While the other aspects of the Doctor are content to appear in Time Lord robes, the Eighth Doctor insists on retaining a less formal outfit. It suited him so well when it made its debut in “The Night of the Doctor.” As Potter put it when discussing the blooming tree outside his window, “I see it is the whitest, frothiest, blossomest blossom that there ever could be, and I can see it. Melanie Bush apparently made her way back to 21st century Earth somehow after departing the TARDIS in the company of mercenary Sabalom Glitz. In fact, Ace infamously set about one with a baseball bat (much like the one she wields here) in “Remembrance of the Daleks” after it made the fatal mistake of describing her as “small.” - Goatees and beards in general have been a key look for many of the Master’s regenerations. Having run out of lives, a decayed Master (Peter Pratt/Geoffrey Beevers) was forever seeking a way to steal - Upon arriving at UNIT, the Master reels off a litany of jibes that double as easter eggs. - Before we even see the Master’s face, a big clue as to his identity can be heard when the royal messenger knocks four times. Her debut appearance in “Logopolis” marked what should have been her first day on the job, leading to a running gag about the Doctor’s inability to reach Heathrow Airport. - Ace and Graham make liberal use of upgraded Nitro-9, a homemade explosive Ace created when younger.

The BBC has confirmed that David Tennant, who previously played the role between 2005 and 2010, has officially returned as the 14th Doctor. A feature-length programme aired on Sunday evening (October 23), titled The Power Of The Doctor, brought an end to her time in the sci-fi series as the 13th iteration of the character. Doctor Who showrunner Chris Chibnall also wrote and created the ITV drama. Fans were left shocked at the scenes, but also pointed out how Durdle Door will now go down as an iconic setting from the sci-fi series. An iconic Dorset landmark will go down in Doctor Who folklore after it was the setting of Jodie Whittaker's final appearance as Doctor Who. In her last words, she said: “The blossomiest blossom.

During the story, time begins to move backwards, turning K-9 into a pile of components and squeezing the Doctor through his previous incarnations. As yet, there is no known date for the start of series 14, other than beyond November 2023. This allowed the Doctor to forcibly regenerate into the Master. It is possible this process continued to affect the Doctor as she regenerated. Jon Pertwee's Third Doctor and Patrick Troughton's Second Doctor are both depicted as part of that journey before stopping at William Hartnell's First Doctor. PlymouthLive reported in January that he would play the 'next Doctor' and would not be returning as Doctors normally do, extracted from their own timestream and deposited back with no memories when the ordeal is over. Predictably, one of his first words was "What?"

To do anything less is a disservice to both of these characters and also the show's considerable LGBTQ+ fanbase. Doctor Who will return to BBC One next year in the UK. "You can’t keep it going for that long because there's always planets to save or monsters to deal with, and all of that kind of stuff." That's all well and good, but the problem here is that there isn't really much of a love story whatsoever. That's something the Doctor usually has in spades, but here, we needed more time to develop #Thasmin's relationship and to finally centre queerness fully in what's long been a queer show. And this stings, even more, when you consider how long it took for #Thasmin to even be acknowledged in the first place. It's the kind of wave you might give to a mate before you go off for the summer holidays. 'Doctor Who' Needs to Get Over Itself (WIRED)

At the end of its 39th season, it's become clear the Time Lord's world, despite always regenerating, has become static and small.

In the past 17 years, the mythology of Who has become, if anything, even more arcane and far more self-referential and confusing. If Doctor Who wants to keep people engaged enough to make it to its 70th anniversary, it needs to remind people why they should care. [lined up](https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-61371123) Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa to play the Time Lord (after David Tennant [returns to the role](https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2022/10/surprise-doctor-who-reveals-two-history-making-leads-for-2023) for a brief stint). With ratings on the slide and online buzz seemingly at an all-time low, it’s clear that the new generation of fans who discovered the show during its revival are getting bored of what was once fresh and exciting. The show’s next series—its 14th since the revival and 40th overall—is slated to have Russell T. This isn’t to say Whittaker wasn’t a compelling Doctor but rather that in the nearly two decades since the show was rebooted in 2005, its tricks have gotten old.

Doctor Who: Critics praise Jodie Whittaker's swansong (BBC News)

Reviews of Sunday's finale were broadly positive, although some said too much was packed into the episode.

He added: "Despite an abundance of distractions, Jodie Whittaker and Mandip Gill remain the throbbing heart of the story, as the Doctor and Yaz breeze through a rollicking adventure but must prepare for a sorrowful parting... This was frightening fun in the show's best traditions." "It is a great send-off for Whittaker, focused and full of feeling, which makes this an apt welcome for Gatwa, too." but the scripts have often let her down a little," she said. "Considering this is a super-long episode, it trots along at a decent speed and the pace rarely dips. It confuses. "Moments where what's happening, however intergalactic, however epoch-hopping, however sassy, has time to register. It confounds. It surprises. Only the 'present' part of the equation suffered. "[The episode] reminded us that actually you need one or two dull bits for drama to be dramatic," he said. The frenetic story threw in so many playful bells and fan-pleasing whistles, it became nonsensical, as if Chibnall painted himself into a plotting corner and didn't know how to escape."
