THE MPs supporting Boris Johnson brought this on themselves. They really should have seen it coming.
One anonymous staffer working for an MP who had backed Johnson told Politico: “If I f***ing see him, he better hope he’s got a quick flight back to the Dominican Republic. Rees-Mogg had previously shared a graphic claiming the UK’s choice was “Boris or bust”. He wrote: “A day is a long time in politics… Poor Zahawi was no doubt on the blower to the Telegraph begging them to take down his article – something they obligingly did. Paper published Nadhim Zahawi article online just as news came through of Johnson's withdrawal.
But for the good of the party and the nation, he set his dream aside. In terms of political influence, one rightwing newspaper group has possibly come out of the recent turmoil with more leverage. By withdrawing from the race, he has spared his party a bloody and fatal civil war.” Headlined “Get ready for Boris 2.0, the man who will make the Tories and Britain great again”, the piece set out a case for why the former prime minister would imminently return triumphant to Downing Street. When Johnson eventually did decide to stand aside on Sunday night, it was just in time for a rapid rewriting of newspaper editorials. Within minutes, the Telegraph had made the unusual decision to wipe Zahawi’s article from the internet without following the standard journalistic practice of offering an explanation or leaving an editor’s note.
